Oxford 2nd half surge provides comeback win; UV unselfish play leads to MAC win

OXFORD – Wednesday’s contest between the Oxford Blackhawks and Warriors from Sidney was a tale of two halves. Oxford overcame a 15 point deficit at halftime with a 22-5 run in the third quarter in their 51-43 MAC Conference win.
Sidney started the game with a four point lead after the first quarter of play and extended it to 15 with their 17-6 second quarter run. During the eight minute stretch, the Warriors’ Liam Matthews tallied 16 of his game-high 20 points with eight made field goals inside the 3-point arc.
Blackhawks head coach Tim Davis stated that his team didn’t shoot or defend well in the first half, which allowed the visiting team to gain a big lead before the intermission. “We were just playing too upright in the first half,” said Davis.
Out of the break, Oxford settled in, shooting 8-for-14 from the field in the third quarter. In the 22 point run, the Blackhawks drained four from long-distance – two from the hands of Jason Davis.
After beind held scoreless in the first quarter, Jason scored his team-high 17 points over the next three quarters, including his two 3’s and a perfect 2-for-2 at the foul line.
“We shot better, defended better and didn’t turn the ball over as much in the second half,” said Coach Davis on how his team produced the comeback.
With a two point lead heading into the final quarter of play, Oxford out scored the Warriors 15-9 as they held on for the win.
Jason Davis pulled down 14 rebounds to go along with his point total. C.J Smith add eight boards, a couple of which came as offensive rebounds late in the game when the Blackhawks held the lead.
Oxford also saw an outstanding game from Matt Roach as he finished with a season-high 15 points. Brad Beckwith chipped in eight points in the win.
Sidney’s Jon Palmatier scored all 12 of his points behind the 3-point line in the loss.
The Blackhawks play one more before the holiday break when they travel to Chenango Valley for a non-league game on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Unadilla Valley 72, Bainbridge-Guilford 43
NEW BERLIN – The Storm played with a fast tempo for all four quarters, jumping out to a 24-7 lead after the first quarter against the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats. Unadilla Valley won the MAC conference game by a final of 72-45.
The two middle stanzas saw UV outscore the Bobcats 39-25 but B-G rallied in the final eight minutes of play as they went on a 13-9 run.
During the stretch, the Bobcats had balanced scored throughout and were led by Ethan Gregory’s five points in the quarter.
Unadilla Valley’s Andrew Jackson and Levi Rifanburg combined for 21 of the team’s 24 first quarter points. Jackson finished the game with 15 points.
Rifanburg added seven more in the next two quarters but a basket that kicked off the second half of play was one that will be featured on a highlight reel.
After inbounding the ball to Jackson, Rifanburg sat on the wing and received a pass from his colleagyue. Quickly reversing the ball back, Rifanburg cut to he basket and picked up a screen from teammate Spencer Meade. As he was on his way to the rim, Jackson delivered a quick pass to Wyatt Grey who then lobbed the ball towards Rifanburg in the air.
The Storm’s senior finished the play with a two-handed slam, completing the designed ally-oop play. He ended the night with 19, a game-high point total.
Grey’s scoring came in the middle 16 minutes as he knocked down three 3-pointers for 12 of his 17 scored.
The Storm shared the ball very well in the win as three UV players ended the night in double digits and seven others posted points in the scoring column.
Jackson recorded a team-best seven assists while Gray added four in the win. Rifanburg pulled down six rebounds also.
The Bobcats were led by Tom Palmatier, who once again scored double digits in a game this season. He ended the night with a team-high 16 points with teammate Haiden Burns adding 10.
Unadilla Valley is now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the MAC conference. Their next game is part of the UV Holiday Tournament which starts on Thursday, December 27. The Storm take on Sherburne-Earlville in the opening round.
Bainbridge-Guilford will be one of the four teams participating in the Ray Clement Tournament, hosted by Morris. The action for the first round starts on Thursday also.
