Norwich bounces back from first loss of the season to secure 5th place at Josh Palmer Tournament

ELMIRA – On the final day of the three-day Josh Palmer tournament, hosted by Elmira, Norwich faced a familiar foe – the Seton Catholic Saints.
As the two teams saw each other just a week earlier in a regular season game with the Lady Tornado taking the victory, Seton out for revenge. However, Norwich spoiled their retalation hopes and claimed a 64-55 win over the Saints to finish fifth with a 2-1 in the tournament.
Led by the offensive attack of Taylor Hansen and Sydney Coggins and the effort on defense to stop Seton’s two top scorers – Marina Maerkl and Julia Hauer – the Tornado were able to overcome the the double figure lead that the Saints held in both halves of the game.
Norwich held a 19-17 advantage after the first quarter with 10 points coming from Hansen’s finishes at the rim, driving to the bucket when she saw the open lane.
The Saints responded in the second, out scoring the Tornado 14-12 to tie the score up at 31 as the two teams headed into the locker room for the halftime break.
Following the intermission, Seton Catholic once again went on a run to give them a double digit lead. Norwich, however, responded in the same stanza and closed to the early stretch deficit by the Saints as they pulled within a point before the final eight minutes of play.
That is when the Tornado stole the win.
Norwich went on a 16-6 run in the fourth behind Hansen and Halea Eaton’s free throw shooting, Coggins five points from the floor, and Triniti Myers dialing in from long-distance. After the first quarter, Norwich led by one point but over the next two quarters, the Tornado began to pull away as they out scored Horseheads 29-18.
Their 12 point lead heading into the fourth was enough to hold off the Raiders as the two teams matched point for point.
Horsehead’s Carly Scott knocked down five 3-pointers for 15 of her team-high 16 points.
Norwich also saw seven points from both Coggins and Eaton while Myers added six. Benedict also scored five in the contest and Emily Evans chipped in three.
