Accused child rapist released from jail after prosecutors refuse to make 6-year-old victim testify

NORWICH – A Norwich man accused of raping a young child was released on his own recognizance Thursday after an hour-long conference between attorneys.


Jamie Lynn Whitmore Jr., 23, of Norwich is charged with first-degree rape and first-degree criminal sexual act, both Class B felony, He is also charged with and endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanor.


According to court records, the crime allegedly occurred on November 19, on Borden Avenue, in the City of Norwich with a six-year-old victim.

During Whitmore's appearance in Norwich City Court on December 20, he was denied a bail reduction after District Attorney Michael Ferrarese said, “He poses a serious flight risk, and the people would ask that bail remain the same to ensure he appears at future court dates.” He was remanded to jail on $25,000 cash bail.


However during Whitmore's appearance on Thursday afternoon he was released without any bail.


Ferrarese said after a conversation with opposing council they had agreed to release him pending future court appearances.

    Sad to think that they still have Ernest Franklin behind bars now going on two years for tragic loss of their son in a trailer fire. Father is faced with life in jail following the tragic Trailer fire that took the life of their sixteen year old son.

    I agree a 6 year old shouldn't be forced to testify as then the other lawyer fighting for his client can effect that child for life,but to release him that's disgusting.
