Fatnango Fat Bike Extravaganza gets green light from council

NORWICH – The first Fatnango Fat Bike Extravaganza is officially set to take place in Norwich on Saturday, February 16 after city council members unanimously supported it at the December 18 meeting.

The winter biking event was created by cycling aficionado and Norwich resident Jason Miller, along with Rob Baker of the Galena Growlers Mountain Bike team, Dan Sepello and Sara Behrmann of Action Cyclery LLC, and Kevin Cruz of the Greenway Trails committee.

The hope, Miller said, is to highlight the city's trails and promote outdoor activities through a community supported, family-friendly event that could eventually become tradition in Norwich.

The Fatnango Fat Bike Extravaganza races will feature a number of classes including beginner, intermediate, and advanced, with each race starting and finishing in Norwich's Weiler Park, and taking place across a two and a half mile track on the Greenway Trails.

During the December 4 joint committees meeting, Miller explained to city officials that a fat bike is essentially a mountain bike with 3.5-to-5 inch tires, primarily ridden in the snow, slush, or mud. For those who don't own a fat bike Miller said some demo bikes will be provided at the event, and he invited people to bring their mountain bikes down as well.

"Cycling is a healthy activity that lasts a lifetime and it's something that families can do forever together outside," said Miller. "Mountain biking has been transforming economically challenged and rural communities in the last year or so. We're not really doing it for the money, we're doing it to highlight the healthy things you can do in our parks, exposing our trails, and really just having fun in the winter and snow."

In addition to the races, the event will feature food and drink options including Bueno Tacos, FoJo Beans, Good Nature Brewing, Bullthistle Brewing Company, Chobani, and more to be announced. Miller said Norwich Outdoor Power Equipment has also offered its SnowDog to groom the trails for the event.

Participating in the race is $20, and kids 18-and-under are free. If you'd like to register to participate in the race, visit www.bikereg.com/fatnango.
