Oxford’s 4th quarter free throw shooting snags road win over Spartans
S-E goes cold from the floor in 4th in loss to Hawkeyes
OTEGO – The Blackhawks went 11-for-13, shooting 85 percent in the fourth quarter at the free throw line. Their sharp shooting at the stripe pushed Oxford past the host Unatego Spartans in a Midstate Athletic Conference battle Monday night, 52-43.
The Spartans led through the first three quarters of play in the contest but the deadeye foul shooting by both Jason Davis and Jacob Murrer of the Blackhawks allowed the visiting team to take the lead late in the contest, coming out with the victory.
Davis shot a perfect 5-for-5 down the stretch at the foul line while Murrer went 5-for-6. Their combined total of 10 made free throws added to Alex Smith’s one accounted for more than half of Oxford’s points during their 21-10 run in the closing quarter.
Counting for 13 of his game-high 25 points, Davis shot 13-for-18 throughout the contest at the line (72 percent).
Unatego held a five point lead at the end of the first quarter but Oxford chipped away at the small margin a little at a time.
The Spartans led 19-17 at the break and continued with the same lead after the two teams matched point-for-point in the third.
Austin Faulkner of Unatego started the game out strong, scoring seven in the opening quarter. He finished with a team-best 16 points for Unatego. Miles Mohrein and Shea Barber scored 11 and nine points, respectively.
Davis also collected 13 rebounds in the contest, giving him another double-double on the season. Murrer ended the night with eight points and was matched by teammate C.J. Smith in the scoring column. Smith added nine boards.
Alex Smith of Oxford came in the off the bench and played big minutes for his team, dropping seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter scoring rout for the Blackhawks.
Oxford travels to Franklin for a non-conference matchup at 7:15 p.m., Wednesday.

Cooperstown 56, Sherburne-Earlville 48
UTICA – After holding a lead at the end of the first and third quarters, the Marauders saw a chance to take down one of the top teams in the Center State Conference – the Cooperstown Hawkeyes.
However Sherburne-Earlville went cold, scoring just two points in the final four minutes of the game while Cooperstown closed out the game on an 11 point run to take the 56-48 win and stay undefeated on the season.
The Hawkeyes ended the fourth outscoring S-E 18-8 and were paced by Jack Lambert’s eight points. Lambert, a Section III stand-out for Cooperstown, ended the contest with a total of 27 points on nine made shots from the floor and eight points at the free throw line.
After balanced scoring attack in the first quarter, the Marauders held a 17-12 lead. In the second, Sherburne-Earlville’s Hunter Lane scored all 10 of the team’s points while the Hawkeyes put 15 up on the scoreboard to tie the game at 27-27.
A battle in the third saw S-E pull head by two points heading in the the final stanza.
Cooperstown took the lead early in the fourth but the Marauders fought back to pull ahead by one point with 4:13 remaining in the contest.
About a minute later, the Hawkeyes turned their offensive production on and went on an 11-2 run for the win.
Lane poured in a team-high 24 points as S-E only saw five players register points in the game. Lane’s colleague chipped in nine and Hill added eight in the loss.
Lambert also had five rebounds, three steals and three assists to go along with his point total. Teammate John Kennedy recorded a double-double for the the Hawkeyes, tallying 10 points and pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.
Ryan Lansing finished the game with seven point while Noah Lifgren scored six and added nine boards to his statline.
Sherburne-Earlville is in action again Tuesday as they head to Waterville for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
