Chenango Health Network to offer free Mental Health First Aid training

NORWICH – Chenango Health Network will offer Mental Health First Aid training in Norwich from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m on Wednesday, January 30 as part of a national initiative to increase mental health literacy.

The training will help attendees learn to recognize if a friend, family member, employee, customer or colleague is struggling with a mental health or substance use disorder, and provide a five step action plan that guides trainees through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support. It’s free to the public to attend.

The class will take place in the Norwich Eaton Center’s Chenango Conference Room on the fourth floor, and individuals interested in registering can contact Christine Paul or Jamie Hagenbuch at Chenango Health Network by calling (607) 337-4128 or emailing chris@chenangohealth.org or jamie@chenangohealth.org.

A press release for the class states, “Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis.”

It further states one-in-five Americans has a mental illness, many of which can be difficult to detect. Because it can be difficult for friends and family members to know when and how to intervene, many people in need of mental health services often don’t get them until it’s too late.

“Through this program, we hope to take the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems,” said Linda Rosenberg, President and CEO of the National Council for Behavioral Health, which helped bring Mental Health First Aid to the United States in 2008. “When more people are equipped with the tools they needs to start a dialogue, more people can get the help they may need.”

In the 10 years since first offering classes in the U.S., more than one million people have been trained in Mental Health First Aid.

More information about Mental Health First Aid USA can be found at www.MentalHealthFirstAid.org. The Eaton Center’s Chenango Conference Room is located at 24 Conkey Avenue in Norwich.
