Free tax prep available to Chenango County citizens
CHENANGO COUNTY – For the 10th year, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is offering free income tax preparation at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Norwich for individuals who make less than $54,000.
According to VITA Program Coordinator Casey Frazee, starting in February Chenango County residents who earned less than $54,000 in 2018 can have their income tax filed for free by calling Norwich’s Cornell Office and setting up an appointment.
“The VITA program is an IRS certified program, and there are organizations throughout the United States that offer it,” said Casey. “We have volunteers that are trained who go into different areas and communities that offer free tax prep to families or individuals who make less than $54,000.”
She said students at Colgate University become certified in tax prep and volunteer their time to assist families with their income taxes.
“It’s students from all different backgrounds and they have to pass the same certifications, and the students go out regularly and meet with the clients,” said Casey. “A lot of our clients are able to collect the child tax credit, but often times private tax preparers will charge $100 to process it.”
She said by going through VITA at Cornell, individuals are receiving an extra $100 that they would have paid, and tax returns are generally processed and returned in two weeks or less.
“Some businesses will offer taxpayers a percentage of on-the-spot cash back if you file your taxes through them, but we’re trying to encourage them to wait the two weeks and get their full refunds back through us,” said Casey. “If you can hold off, you can get your full refund without losing any percentage of it.”
She said the program processed 880 tax returns last year between the two counties, and returned approximately $1.6 million dollars back in returns for the individuals who filed them. She added that individuals interested in filing through VITA will need photo proof of identification, social security cards, wage and earning statement forms, W-2’s, W-2G’s, and 1099-R forms from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks, copies of prior year federal and state returns, form 1099-G and 1095-A, B, or C forms if applicable.
Both spouses must be present to sign joint returns.
To arrange an appointment please call Cornell Cooperative Extension at (607) 334-5841 ext. 11.
If you are a senior citizen 60+, you are eligible for free tax return preparation regardless of income. For an appointment in Chenango County, please call Chenango County Area Agency on Aging at (607) 337-1770.
She said for individuals and families with household incomes of $62,000 or less, www. MyFreeTaxes.com can provide free online federal and state tax preparation and filing assistance.
