Tornado swat away Yellowjackets to extend win streak to four

ONEONTA – After a rough start shooting wise for both teams, the Lady Purple Tornado were the first to find a rhythm as they once again controlled the tempo of the game to extend their win streak to four with a 62-40 win over rival Oneonta Tuesday.
Both the host Yellowjackets and Norwich were turnover prone to start the contest as the two did not put a point on the scoreboard until 5:09 left in the first quarter when the Tornado’s Halea Eaton made one of two at the free throw line.
As they got the monkey of their back, Norwich started to make their shooting attempts to go on a 14-6 run to finish the quarter. Nine of the Tornado’s 14 came from long range as Eaton, Triniti Myers and Sydney Coggins knocked down 3-pointers in the quarter.
The second quarter was were Norwich pulled away, scoring nine points in 60 seconds two minutes into the stanza. Two Taylor Hansen made foul shots kicked of the scoring spurt and Eaton closed it out with a steal off in the Oneonta back court and quick finish, putting Norwich ahead 26-8.
The Lady Tornado added another 11 points before the end of the second to recorded a total of 22 points in the quarter and ahead 37-15.
In the third, the Yellowjackets outscored Norwich 14-13 behind nine points at the foul line. Oneonta went 9-for-10 in the quarter.
Norwich closed out the game with a 12 point fourth quarter, half coming at the 3-point line as Hansen added one in the early minutes and Hailey Colabelli knocked her final attempt down late in the game.
Eaton led all scorers with 18 points, her biggest quarter of production coming in the second. Hansen and Myers each tallied nine in the win and Abby Flynn kicked in seven.
Oneonta’s Taylor Microni ended the night with a team-high 11 points while Ava Eichler also finished in double figures with 10 in the game.
Norwich, now 9-1 overall and 6-0 in their division, will travel to Union-Endicott Saturday afternoon for a non-league contest. Game time is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
