Girls foursome shatters record by nearly 3 seconds

NEW YORK – Approximately 130 schools attended the Stanner games at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory in New York City over the weekend, and the Norwich Purple Tornado Indoor track and field team was one of those teams.
Both the Norwich boys and girls 4x200 meter relay teams broke school records at the contest.
The Tornado 4x200 boys team, who already broke the record earlier this season, set the new record for the third time as a group. Eric Conant, David Berger, Nik Barber and Gabe Gawronski finished with a time of 1:34.07, beating their previously set record by .6 of a second.
Nearly breaking the record for the girls side of the event earlier this season, Norwich’s foursome of Katie Gawronski, Lucie Martin, Angela Carlson and Riley Marsh raced to a time of 1:53.04 to shatter the record that was set in 2015 by nearly three seconds.
The boys team placed seventh out of 47 teams while the girls 4x200 relay took 17th place of 34 teams participating in the event.
Conant made the finals in the 55 meter dash, an event the speedster made it to the New York State Championships for a season ago. Tying the record time he set earlier this season, the Tornado senior placed fourth in the finals with the 6.61 time. Conant took the top seed in the finals following the 6.67 second sprint in the prelims, an event that saw 183 runners.
Gabe Gawronski ran in the 300 meter invitational division Saturday and placed eighth with his time of 35.94, nearly breaking Matt Murray’s school record for Norwich. Gabe’s time was just three-tenths of a second shy of tying the record, a feat he has had his eyes on for the past year.
Sister Katie raced to a time of 1:45.22 – three seconds shy of the school’s record – in the 600 meter girls race. Katie crossed the finish line at a time that secured 19th place out of 131 participants. Teammate Martin, who also ran the race along side Katie, came in .05 seconds after for 20th.
Zach Lowe, Norwich’s stand-out member for the shot put, tossed his best throw in the event at 42 feet-4.5 inches to land in ninth place. He was one of 65 throwers in the event at the Stanner games.
His colleague on the girls side, Shakria Alexander threw for a distance of 29 feet for her 17th place finish in a field of 45 participants in the event.
The Purple Tornado take to the track again on Friday at the Hurley Invite, held at Ithaca College. Races being at 5 p.m.
