Late game free throws give Marauders road win

UV takes down Walton on the road

ONONDAGA – Sherburne-Earlville’s Noah Posson went to the free throw line with 37 seconds remaining in the contest with the game tied between the Marauders and their opponent, the Onondaga Central Tigers. Posson thrived under the pressure, hitting both shots at the stripe to give S-E a two point lead late in the contest.
In a crowd of players with 15 seconds left, Posson pulled down a rebound on the defense end of the floor, sealing the deal for Sherburne-Earlville to pick up the 64-62 win.
“We didn’t play our best,” said S-E’s head coach Kevin Vibbard, “but we were able to pull out the win.”
The Marauders went into the intermission with a four point lead after the first two quarters of play were back and forth basketball. Helping Sherburne-Earlville take the small advantage at the break was their 16 point second quarter which saw five different players score a basket.
Marauders’ Owen Rodriguez and Robert Hill led the scorers in the stanza as each player kicked in a 3-pointer, giving them five points each for the second.
Out of the halftime break, Sherburne-Earlville’s Hunter Lane scored eight as the team went on a 21 point scoring frenzy to extend their lead to double figures by the start of the fourth quarter.
In the final eight minutes of play, the Marauders’ offense went cold. S-E had some trouble putting the ball through the net while the Tigers rallied, chipping away slowly at the 10 point lead.
Scoring the last bucket for Onondaga was Wes Carr, tying the game at 62-62 with two of his game-high 21 points.
The Tigers did get another look following Posson’s two made free throws that gave the Sherburne-Earlville the lead but Posson came up big once again.
Lane tallied 17 in the scoring column to lead the Marauders while Ryan Asma hit three from long range for nine of his 11 points. Posson and Gabe Irwin each chipped in eight.
Onondaga’s Logan Nordman scored in double digits, finishing with 15 in the loss.
