Construction underway to create Chenango Dialysis Center
NORWICH – Construction is currently underway to remodel a facility into a Chenango Dialysis Center in Norwich's Tops Plaza.
During the Code Enforcement report at the city joint committee meeting Tuesday, Norwich Fire Chief Jan Papelino provided city officials with a codes update on the project, which is taking place in Suite 6a at 54 East Main Street.
He said the construction company in charge of the remodeling has been doing extensive work, including an overhaul of all the flooring and plumbing. City Code Enforcement Officer Amy Donnison performed an inspection on the facility's plumbing and electric, Papelino said, and the next step of the project will be putting up sheet rock in the center.
The construction will also include the creation of a handicapped ramp at the rear end of the building.
The dialysis center will be the only one in Chenango County, and will be a convenience to residents who currently have to travel to other centers in Oneonta, Cooperstown, or Binghamton – sometimes multiple times a week – for their dialysis.
"This is something that really fills a need," said Papelino, noting that traveling to other areas for dialysis on a regular basis quickly becomes tiresome and time consuming. "It's great that we're getting one, it really is. It's going to help people and it will be a really good thing for the area."
As for a completion date, Papelino recalled to city officials that the construction company in charge has an incentive to finish the work sometime May, and that hopefully by early June it will be up-and-running. He estimated the codes department first received permit documents for the project in September 2018.
