Man convicted of Oxford murder dies in prison

AUBURN – Jeremy Coates, who was convicted of killing an Oxford man and then stealing guns and marijuana last year, died in prison on Friday from causes undisclosed by prison officials.

Representatives of the Chenango County Public Defender’s Office, who represented Coates at trial, confirmed Thursday Coates died in prison, and said no information about his death had yet been provided by prison officials.

When asked for a cause of death earlier this week Auburn prison officials said they would provide it at a later time. They have yet to provide one.

Coates was found guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of first-degree robbery in April, 2018.
