CHENANGO COUNTY – Greene’s McKenna Sergi and Afton’s Madison Baciuska were named to the first team of Max Field Hockey’s Northeast Regional Field Hockey Squad.
Also selected to the first team from Section IV were senior Leanne Bough of Whitney Point and Maine-Endwell juniors Anna Castaldo and Sam Palmer.
Sergi, a midfielder who has committed to the University of Connecticut, was named first-team All-State and Section IV Division I first-team, and was on both the Preseason Regional Player to Watch and All-American Watch Lists. Sergi finished with six goals and six assists while leading the Coach Christine Battaglini’s Trojans to the Section IV Class C semifinals where they lost to eventual state champion Whitney Point.
Baciuska, a midfielder heading to Wake Forest, was also a first-team All-State and Preseason Regional Player to Watch selection and was also a Section Four Division II first team pick after leading Coach Josh Conover’s Crimson Knights to the Section IV Class B championship and a spot in the NYSPHSAA Class B Final Four this fall, losing to state powerhouse Lakeland, 1-0, in the semifinals. Baciuska finished this fall with 21 goals and 10 assists.
Lakeland had won nine straight state championships before falling in the finals this season. Their coach, Sharon Sarsen, was named National High School Field Hockey Coach of the Year last week.
Junior Janelle Volk of Afton and senior Amy Stevens of Whitney Point were named to the second team Northeast Regional squad. Volk directed a stingy Afton defense until a late-season knee injury ended her 2018 campaign.
Stevens and Bough led Whitney Point to their fifth consecutive NYSPHSAA Class C championship.
