Lady Trojans lose heartbreaker at buzzer in Walton

WALTON – Marka MacGibbon, an eighth-grade for the Walton Warriors, drained the biggest shot of her young career with 1.2 seconds remaining in a premier contest against Midstate Conference Athletic foe Greene on Friday. MacGibbon’s 3-pointer gave Walton the 41-39 win and pulled ahead of the Trojans in the girls basketball standings.
Greene trailed by 13 at the end of the third quarter but completely eliminated the deficit with 12.2 seconds led as Olivia Kennedy knocked down a jumper from the baseline.
Walton took an early 12-10 lead after the first quarter but the two teams combined for a total of nine points in the second. Greene took the one point advantage into the break after outscoring the Warriors 6-3 in the stanza.
The home team then came out of the locker room and went on a 15-8 run, taking over the game in the third.
The Trojans, however, answered with their own 15-8 run in the final eight minutes of play to tie the game at 39-39.
After back-to-back chances on out-of-bounds plays by the Warriors, Walton missed both. With the third time being the charm, MacGibbon hit the long ball just before the buzzer to give her team the victory.
McKenna Sergi led the Trojans with 13 points while both Kennedy and Emma Smith added nine points each.
Walton’s Olivia Harby ended the contest with 14 to lead all scorers and teammate McKenzie Clough finished with 13.
Greene dropped to 5-2 in the conference, 11-4 overall, while Walton moves one game ahead with a few other teams in the standings.
