Father accused of assaulting baby that died considers deal

NORWICH – The man accused of causing the death of his 20-month-old child is scheduled to discuss accepting or rejecting a plea deal in Chenango County Court on Monday.


Devan A. Ellsworth, 28, of Norwich has been indicted for second-degree manslaughter, a C class felony, and criminally negligent homicide, a E class felony, after he allegedly struck his daughter on her face and caused a subdural hematoma, which prosecutors say led to her death.


The incident occurred at around 6 p.m. on August 26, following a 911 call. The Norwich Police and Fire Departments responded. According to police, upon arrival officers saw a 20-month-old with injuries to her face and head.

Officials said she was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital and then moved to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, but ultimately she died in Upstate University Hospital the following day.
