Blackhawks fly past Eagles on Davis’ historic night

Tornado cruise by Black Knights

DEPOSIT – Oxford’s Jason Davis needed eight points to reach 1,000 for his career in a Blackhawks uniform entering Monday’s game against the Eagles of Deposit/Hancock. It took all of three minutes and eight of Oxford’s first 10 points before he reached his mark as he drained his second 3-pointer of the game.
The Blackhawks then rolled to a 75-36 Midstate Athletic Conference win over the Eagles on the road behind Davis’ game-high 28 points and teammate Brad Beckwith’s 22 in the contest.
The two combined for 20 of Oxford’s 24 points in the first quarter as the guests took a 24-18 lead.
With balanced scoring between four players in the second, Oxford put up 17 to extend their lead. Defensively, the Blackhawks limited Deposit/Hancock to three points in the stanza to build a 14 point margin at the break.
After the break, Oxford showed no signs of slowing down. The visiting team scored 17 in both of the two remaining quarters while holding their opponent to single digits.
Beckwith and Davis each recorded a double-double as well with Beckwith pulling down 10 boards and Davis grabbing 20 rebounds off the glass.
The Blackhawks also witnessed Jacob Murrer scoring double figures as he finished with 11. Nick Cirello and Josh Christian each kicked in six points for Oxford.
Deposit-Hancock was led by Caleb Walker’s team-high 19 points.
Oxford hosts Bainbridge-Guilford at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Norwich 57, Windsor 41
WINDSOR – Norwich used the middle two quarters of the contest to run away with a 57-41 Southern Tier Athletic Conference win over the host Windsor Black Knights.
The Purple Tornado combined to score 32 points in the second and third quarters, pulling away from Windsor.
A difference maker on the floor for Norwich was Jon Clarke in the early part of the second quarter. The Tornado held a 16-14 lead after the opening quarter but the first basket of the second was scored by Windsor, prompting Norwich head coach Tom Collier switch something up.
That something was Clarke.
“Jon changed the game with his post presence,” said Collier. “Jon is getting better at understanding that he can be a force in the paint by using his length to his advantage.”
Sitting in the driver’s seat from there, Norwich used a strong defensive effort to cruise into the fourth quarter with a 21 point lead.
In the fourth, Collier said he cleared the bench to give some of the younger guys some varsity experience. One of those players was Carson Thornton who made his varsity debut to help Norwich combat some of the illness and injuries that had been battling.
“I was very pleased how Carson looked and what he gave us,” Collier said of the sophomore. “He pushed the ball well for us in transition and did a nice job running the offense. He is a very good defender in addition to his offensive skills.
“He is really going to help solidify our guard play off the bench as we have been struggling with some injuries and sickness as of late. He played all summer with us and did well as a reserve for us then. He is going to remain with us for the rest of the year and he can bring some much needed support to our over-taxed starting guards who have played a ton of minutes for us this year.”
Having an overall outstanding performance was Norwich’s J.T. Vinal. Nearly recording a triple-double in the contest, Vinal put up a game-high 21 points while pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing out seven assists.
Skylar Wenzel finished the inside game for the Tornado with 13 points while Marcus Cashman and Carson Maynard each scored in double figures, tallying 11 and 10 respectively.
The Purple Tornado’s game with the Saints of Seton Catholic was scheduled for Tuesday but has been pushed back to Wednesday.
The game with Seton will help determine who will win the division this season as the Saints currently sit at the top of the standings with one loss while Norwich is currently in second with two.
“It’s nice to still have control of our own fate going into the last two weeks of the regular season,” Collier said. “Seton is always tough in their own gym and I’m sure it will be a full house. Their gym will be rocking, its always a great high school atmosphere down there with their student body sitting so close to the court and their school band blaring their music at us. We have had many great games with them in the past I expect this game to be no different.
The game time is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at Seton High School.
