Purple Tornado Shut out Forks on the lanes

Boys claim STAC East Division title

NORWICH – The Purple Tornado boys bowling team clinched first place in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference East Division after their 5-0 win over Chenango Forks Monday afternoon. The Norwich squad returned five of their seven bowlers that reached the New York State Championships a year ago and topped the Blue Devils in the match by 690 pins.
The Tornado’s Nick Deady and Griffin Clipston each bowled a 627 series, tying for the best three-game total for the match. Deady’s third game score was a 247––the highest of the afternoon by any bowler in the match.
Clipston rolled two 200-plus games to lead Norwich in the first two games of the match. Teammate Cameron Birtch finished the match with a 581 series that included a 212 game in the third while Scotty Manwarren hit 200 in game two on his way to an end total of 520 for the three games.
Kai Sheer rounded out the top five with a 460 series. His highest single game was a 170.
In each of the three games, the team combined to bowl a game score of 900-plus pins with 972 being their highest in the second game.
The Norwich girls team also swept Chenango Forks in the match, winning 5-0.
Gabby Warren of the Lady Tornado recorded a team-best 469 series that started with the highest single game by any Norwich bowler in the match. Her 174 in game one helped the home team take the game by 151 pins.
Norwich’s Marleigha Clipston bowled the next best score for the team, finishing with a three-game total of 436. Clipston’s 163 in game two and 146 game three were the best scores on the lanes for the Tornado.
Lexi Taylor rolled a 375 series in the match, aiding the in the Norwich sweep while teammates Morgan Conkling and Macauley Brown capped the Tornado top five with a 367 and 319 respectively.
Prior to the start of the match, head coach Art Rigus and assistant coach Misty Golden honored their 12 seniors that will graduate in June. The group of bowlers is the highest number that the program has ever graduated in one season.
Next on the schedule for Norwich is the STAC Championship Tournament, which will be held on Monday, February 4. Action will start at 3 p.m. in Vestal at Midway Lanes.
