Tornado runners take down another school record

4x400 Norwich boys team beats 7 year old time

UTICA – The Norwich Indoor Track and Field team has witnessed several previous records come down this season. Adding another to the list was the 4x400 meter relay record as the foursome of Eric Conant, Noah Bufalini, Nik Barber and Gabe Gawronski shattered the record Friday night by four seconds at the Utica Challenge.
The previous record was set at 3:36.11 seconds, set in 2012 by Nate Ashton, Cameron Prime, Matt Murray and John Mooney.
The foursome of the Tornado also took down the meet record, finishing first for the event.
The 4x200 relay team, who has broken their own record twice this season, did not take down the set time in this meet but did place second in the event with a time of 1:34.07.
Gawronski did beat the meet record in the 800 meter, crossing the finish line at 1:59.87 for second place. The Norwich senior runner has been eyeing the school record board in this event for sometime now and has come very close this season. The current time was set by Murray in 2013.
Conant, the Tornado’s top sprinter this season, captured a third place finish with his 6.73 time in the 55 meter dash. Teammate David Berger placed 11th in the event, coming across the tape two-tenths of a second behind Conant.
Norwich’s shot put throwers Zach Lowe and Shakria Alexander both stood on the podium in Friday’s meet. Alexander claimed fifth place with her best throw reaching 32 feet-2.5 inches. Lowe’s best distance of three was recorded at 42 feet-6.50 inches for eighth place.
Katie Gawronski was the sixth runner to cross the finish line in the 600 meter run, coming in at a time of 1:43.63 in the meet. Katie was less than a second shy of breaking the record set in the 600. She has already captured the spot on the record board next to the 800 meter run this season.
Also having a great performance for the Tornado at the Utica Challenge was Riley Marsh. Her time of 7.75 in the 55 meter dash was enough to place 10th in the event.
The Norwich Indoor team now prepares for the Section IV Class Championships, held on February 15 at Ithaca.
