Thorton, Selfridge sisters pace Bobcats in win over Eagles
Indians steal win from Marauders in 2nd half
BAINBRIDGE – Kori Thornton of Bainbridge-Guilford had her breakout game of the year, scoring 23 points as the Bobcats topped the Deposit/Hancock Eagles Monday for the second time this season, 69-52.
Thornton, a strong-shooting threat during B-G’s New York State Regional finals run a season ago, has been quiet this season. That changed Monday as she dialed in from long-distance, hitting seven 3-pointers in the contest for 21 of her game total.
Also having an outstanding performance in the contest were Abi and Erica Selfridge. Abi, the Bobcats leading scorer this season, shot 10-for-14 at the free throw line as she finished the night with game-high 29 points.
Erica, the younger Selfridge sister, recorded a double-double the hard way and was a point shy of picking up the triple-double in the contest. She ended the night with 12 assists and 10 rebounds as she added nine points to her statline.
Bainbridge-Guilford took a 17-9 lead after the first quarter and went into the halftime break with a nine point advantage as the Eagles witnessed six different players score to chip away at the deficit.
Out of the locker room after the intermission, Deposit/Hancock balanced their scoring through five players to score 18 points in the third, but Abi Selfridge and Thornton combined for 19 points as the Bobcats pushed the margin to double figures.
As B-G held the Eagles to just nine points in the fourth, Thornton led the way offensively for the home team. With nine points on her own in the stanza as she hit three 3s, the Bobcats pulled away for the 17 point win.
Drake, the Eagles’ guard who recently reached 1,000 points in her career, continues to add to her point total as she finished the game with a team-best 27 points. She was the only player on Deposit/Hancock to end the night with double digits in the scoring column.
Bainbridge-Guildford travels to Walton Wednesday. The two teams are currently battling for the top of the Midstate Athletic Conference standings with Unatego and Delhi. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Sauquoit Valley 55, Sherburne-Earlville 47
SHERBURNE – The Lady Marauders returned to the floor after nearly two weeks off Monday night and started off strong. However, Sauquoit Valley’s Allison Moreau and Marley Inglis had something different planned for Sherburne-Earlville in the second half as the two combined to score 30 points and take the 55-47 win away from the home team.
S-E started the game with back-to-back made 3-pointers from Kaitlyn Furner and Tessa Cole, taking a 6-3 lead in the first two minutes of action. The Marauders closed out the opening quarter with a four point advantage.
The second stanza began the same way as the first except it was Cole who drained the shot from behind the arc first with Furner to follow on the next offensive possession. After putting up 17 on the scoreboard in the quarter, Sherburne-Earlville built a 10 point lead as the two teams went into the locker room for the halftime break.
The visiting Indians came out of the intermission and completely erased the Marauders lead as they went on a 10-0 run in the first four minutes. Furner’s first free throw attempt dropped in, snapping the Sauquoit Valley run.
However, the Indians allowed S-E to score just seven points in the stanza – all by Furner as she went 4-for-6 at the foul line and added a 3-pointer – closing the third out with another eight points to take a two point lead.
SV’s Moreau tallied 13 of her game-high 36 points in during the stanza while Inglis put up six.
As the two teams entered the fourth, the Indians carried the momentum from the previous quarter to outscore Sherburne-Earlville 15-9 to complete the comeback bid.
Marauders’ head coach Jeff Barry stated that his team’s transition defense in the third quarter was rough, allowing Sauquoit Valley to get back into the game. He also shared that S-E shot 15 percent from the field in the second half.
Sherburne-Earlville did out rebound the Indians in the contest and nearly had 1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Inglis ended the night with 12 points for SV.
The Marauders were led by Furner, who recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Cole with 17 points and 9 boards, falling one rebound shy of a double-double. The S-E sophomore added four assists and seven steals to her statline.
Teammate Sage Ashton chipped in six points in the S-E loss.
Sherburne-Earlville (9-7, 2-2) will look to rebound from the loss when they host Center State Conference foe Canastota at 7:15 p.m. Friday night. Currently, S-E sits in third place in their division.
