NORWICH – The Purple Tornado wrestling team took to the mat for the final time at home this season Thursday night, facing the team 12 miles north of them, the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders. Norwich claimed the victory 63-4 but there was more to the dual meet that met the eye.
The Tornado were scheduled to host Dryden on Wednesday for the last dual meet of the year and planned on honoring their seniors prior to the match. However, mother nature had a different plan and forced many school closings and event cancellations and the senior night dual was one of the many.
Norwich head coach Bob Hagenbuch called the Marauders’ coaching staff of Bim Palmer and Brian Hicks and explained the situation. Palmer and Hicks – who currently have zero seniors on their roster – said they weren’t going to allow those kids to not have their special night and agreed to come up the road.
Sherburne-Earlville, who has a total of seven wrestlers on their roster, had to forfeit a number of matches (99, 113, 126, 132, 138, and 285) while 106, 195 and 220 were a forfeit by both teams causing no bout to take place.
The 120 pound bout was the first action on the mat for the dual meet. Norwich’s Nick Glanville took an early shot in the match, bringing down S-E’s Selina Moore to the mat. Needing just 28 seconds, the Purple Tornado senior pinned Moore for his 24th win this season.
At 145 pounds, S-E’s Morgan Lakin and Norwich’s Keegan Wright met for the match of the night. Lakin, a heavy favorite in Section III at 145 pounds, made the first move and score two points with the early takedown. Holding the lead into the second period, Lakin took the down position to start.
Wright used the second period start to his advantage as he picked up three points with a near fall count, taking the 3-2 lead. In the third, the Tornado senior score a penalty point to take the match win with a 4-2 decision.
Norwich’s Mikey Squires took an early lead over the Marauders’ Connor Foster in the 152 pound match. Foster hung on into the second period before Squires completed a rare and complicated move, landing Foster on the mat and pinning him a few seconds later.
S-E’s Teagan Campbell and Norwich’s Dakota Powers went to the mat next for the 160 pound bout. Not going past the first period, Powers took several shots before hitting the final one that brought Campbell to the mat. At 58 seconds, Powers put both of Campbell’s shoulders flat to the mat and picked up the pin for the Tornado.
In the 170 pound match, S-E’s Ethan Eldred took on Angel Francis of the Tornado. Eldred is currently coming off of his win at the Center State Conference tournament while Francis is ranked at the No. 4 spot in Section IV for the 170 pound weight class.
With the two wrestlers avoiding the others shots at the takedown, Eldred was finally able to land the first one. Once he had Francis on the mat, Eldred added another two near fall counts for two points each to take a 6-0 lead into the second period.
To start the second, Eldred chose the down position but quickly reversed out of it to get the top spot. From there, he once again tacked on two more points with a near fall count.
Francis, trying to escape or reverse out of Eldred’s grasp, nearly caught the Marauders’ wrestler in a move that could have set up a chance to pin. Eldred, however, wiggled out and continued to hold the advantage through the end of the period with a 10-0 lead.
Eldred ended with another point on an escape in the third, claiming an 11-0 major decision win.
In the final match of the night, Norwich’s Dakota Hall met Sherburne-Earlville’s Chyle Foster. Before taking the victory in the his final home meet of his career, Hall built up a 7-0 at the end of the first period and added a two point reversal. At the 3:15 mark of the match, Hall put Foster flat for the pinfall.
Prior to the start of the non-league dual meet, Hagenbuch honored his five seniors – Glanville, Francis, Hall, Wright and Austyn Hatton – for their dedication to the wrestling program. Also recognized before the meet was Dante Geislinger as the Norwich wrestler received a plaque for winning his 100th match of his career as well as an award from Senator Fred Akshar.
Both Norwich and Sherburne-Earlville are attending their sectional class meets on Saturday. The Tornado will head to Whitney Point for the Section IV Class B championships while the Marauders are in Cooperstown, attending the Section III Class D championships. Both championship tournaments are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. starts.
