GREENE – Playing its worst game of the season, Greene girls’ basketball coach Dave Gorton didn’t have much to say Friday night after his team committed a season-high 33 turnovers in a 48-21 Midstate Athletic Conference loss to visiting Unatego.
Playing without the benefit of practice the prior two days due to the Polar Vortex, Greene was never in sync from the opening tip, evidenced seven straight turnovers to start the game. Unatego’s 1-2-2 full-court press was a tough riddle to solve without the preparation.
“Having two straight days off obviously didn’t help us at all, especially against a well-coached team like Unatego,” Gorton said.
Even with its tough start, Unatego couldn’t break away early and led only 9-3 at the first-quarter turn.
It would be the closest the Trojans would get the rest of the evening.
Meg Perry scored 9 of her game-high 20 points in the second quarter and Alexa Lucia’s three-pointer at the halftime buzzer helped extend Unatego’s lead to 26-9.
A 10-0 Unatego run to start the third quarter put the game of out of reach.
Emma Smith led Greene with 11 points and 5 rebounds. McKenna Sergi added 5 of her six points in the fourth quarter.
On Saturday, the Trojans boys basketball team took on Susquehanna Valley. Before Greene could get settled, they trailed 15-0 after a quarter, thanks in part to Zach Taro, who scored 13 of his game-high 25 points, as the Sabers rolled to a 54-29 non-league victory Saturday afternoon.
Evan Walters led Greene with 11 points and Nate Barry added six. The Trojans travel to Bainbridge-Guilford Wednesday night.
Greene travels to Bainbridge-Guilford Tuesday then hosts Afton the following evening.
