Coggins’ 3-point shooting performance leads No. 6 Norwich to 10 game winning streak

NORWICH – The Purple Tornado’s Sydney Coggins went 7-for-7 behind the 3-point arc, scoring a game-high 21 in Norwich’s 70-23 win over the visiting Windsor Black Knights Monday night.
Coggins knocked down at least one long ball in each of the four quarters of play and her highest producing stanza was the third when she drained three 3-pointers for nine points. 
Norwich opened up the game with a 27 point first quarter as eight different players record points and all 12 on the roster saw playing time in the first eight minutes.
The intense full-court pressure defense by the Tornado contributed to the early double-digit lead. By the end of the first quarter, Norwich head coach Josh Bennett called off the press and dropped back into a half-court defense.
A low scoring second quarter between the two teams was closed out with Windsor going on a 6-0 but Coggins ended it with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer as the two teams went into the halftime break.
The Purple Tornado came out of the intermission and put up another big quarter, scoring 22 points as a team in the third, to extend their lead to 41.
Norwich controlled the glass throughout, grabbing more rebounds than Windsor at both ends of the floor and pushed the tempo. The Tornado also shared the ball well, distributing several assists as the players dished the ball to the open teammate on most of the baskets scored by the home team.
The Norwich defense, whether in the press in the early minutes or the half-court set for the final three quarters of play, forced the Black Knights into many turnovers, converting on the other end of the floor. Windsor was held to under 10 points in all four quarters of the game.
While Coggins led in the scoring column for Norwich, 11 of the 12 players on the roster contributed. Saige Benedict finished with nine points and both Abby Flynn and Halea Eaton kicked in seven points. Emily Evans and Taylor Hansen added six points each.
Hannah Hagerman had nine for Windsor, a team-high in the contest.
Norwich, who remains at the six spot in the New York State Sports Writers Association state rankings, defeated Utica Proctor on Saturday afternoon as well.
The Tornado started off the contest on strong note, again recording a 20-plus point quarter. Norwich jumped out 23-6 lead and outlasted the physical play of Raiders to win 55-42.
Scoring nine of her game-high 14 points was Triniti Myers with her hot shooting from behind the 3-point line.
As a team, Norwich made eight deep balls in the game with seven coming in the first half of play.
Hansen finished with 13 while Flynn chipped in eight for the win.
The Tornado (14-1, 10-0) host Oneonta Wednesday night for their final regular season home game. Before the start, head coach Josh Bennett and the girls booster club will honor their seven seniors. Game time is schedule for 7:45 with senior night recognition starting around 7:15 p.m.
Deposit/Hancock 52, Oxford 26
HANCOCK – A tough shooting night accompanied the Oxford Lady Blackhawks on the road against Deposit/Hancock Monday night as the Eagles claimed the 52-26 win.
The Blackhawks shot 19-percent from the floor and turned the ball over 31 times in the contest. Their opponents converted on the turnover for 18 of the total points.
Deposit/Hancock led by eight after the first quarter and continued to roll as they extended their lead to 16 at the break.
Oxford came out of the intermission and outscored the home team 10-9 in the third but the Eagles once again put to together double-figures in the final eight minutes of play.
The Blackhawks were led by Madalyn Barrow’s eight points in the game. Karley Miller added four points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the loss. Caitlyn Quigley chipped in five points while teammate Taylor Moore also scored four.
Laycee Drake scored a game-high 20 points and teammate Ariel Kellan added 14 in the win.
Oxford travels to Unadilla Valley Tuesday for their final regular season game. Game time is slated for a 7:15 p.m. start.
Unadilla Valley 53, Harpursville 35
HARPURSVILLE – The Lady Storm used a 19 point third quarter to separate themselves from the Harpursville Hornets on their way to a 53-35 Midstate Athletic Conference victory Friday night. 
Unadilla Valley built an eight point lead by the end of the first half and saw of their players reach double figures in the scoring column.
Kyleigh George scored a game-high 14 points for the Storm while Sophie Off added 11 points. Meegan White and Shelby Meade each had 10.
Meade grabbed 19 rebounds throught the contest, picking up a double-double in the MAC win.
“I thought we played really well after not seeing the floor for two weeks,” UV coach Brandi Whitbeck said.
Harpursville won the fourth quarter, outscoring the Storm 10-8 behind Karina Seely’s four points in the quarter.
The Hornets’ Morgan Flemming hit two from behind the arc for six of her team-high nine points. Teammate Yasmine Warners scored eight and Mackenzie Robertson added seven points in the loss.
Unadilla Valley hosts Oxford on Tuesday night with a 7:15 start with senior night recognition occuring before the start of warmups. The Storm then host Afton on Friday to close out their regular season.
