NORWICH – Norwich's Guernsey Memorial Library has been under construction for four months to address changes that needed to be made under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and it announced on Tuesday that the construction is now complete.

According to Guernsey Memorial Library Director Connie Dalrymple, the project cost approximately $350,000, and it was paid for using a combination of money from a New York State Construction Grant, funds left over from previous budget years, and a bequest from the estate of Wilhemina Henly.

"Guernsey Memorial Library is pleased to announce that its recent renovation, addressing Americans With Disabilities Act issues, is now complete," said Dalrymple. "The project started in October 2018 and addressed wheelchair access to the parking lot entrance, and properly accessible restrooms."

She said four existing restrooms, which had seen no updates since they were created when the building was built, around 1970, were renovated and two restrooms were added, making for three truly ADA accessible restrooms, with access on both floors.

“Library users have been raving about the difference between the old restrooms and the new,” said Dalrymple. “The new restrooms work better and are cleaner and so much more accessible. They also look so much better and more modern. We are thrilled.”

She said the other major focus of the project was to add a wheelchair lift.

“Library users with mobility issues no longer have to leave their car, and negotiate the long ramp to the front door,” said Dalrymple. “They can just make the quick trip to the side door and use the new lift to come up to the main level. The trip is less than a third of what folks used to have to go to get into the building. This will make folks with mobility issues so much more comfortable using the facility.”

Library users who would like more information, a quick tour of the new features, or a demonstration of the lift, are encouraged to email guernsey@4cls.org, or phone the library at 334-4034.
