29 pets to take the stage at CAC during Popovich Comedy Pet Theater on Saturday
NORWICH – The Chenango Arts Council is proud to present the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Martin W. Kappel Theater.
Gregory Popovich's comedy pet theater incorporates eight performers and nearly 30 pets rescued from animal shelters across the country in a comedy-theater performance.
Popovich, a fifth-generation circus performer from Russia, established a strong bond with animals at a young age.
"My first babysitter, my first friends was the pets of my mom," said Popovich, whose show includes the participation of 15 dogs and 14 cats. "And for me it was a very natural communicative space, much easier communicative space than with humans believe it or not."
The Chenango SPCA will be present at the performance to offer information on how community members can foster or adopt a rescue pet. Popovich said after the show, if someone from the audience visits a local animal shelter and adopts a pet, he will feel his message has reached his target.
Chenango Arts Council Executive Director Alecia O'Neill said a model of the Baker Dog Park – the creation of which was authorized by the city Tuesday night – will also be at the event, along with a collection can for people who want to donate towards the park's creation.
"We're so excited to host Gregory Popovich and his troupe of amazing four- and two-legged performers," said O'Neill. "It's going to be a great family show. Come out and support Popovich's pets, and the CSPCA and the Baker Dog Park too."
Popovich said audience members will see a number of skits unfold throughout the performance – including a dog MC introducing the show, a circus clown who loses his job before finding some homeless pets and returning to prosper in the circus, and also a dog class room scene – and they will be tasked with deciding who is more talented: the pets or the performers.
"My pets have much more applause and they always have," said Popovich. "My main slogan of my show is 'Animals are People Too,' so people can see all of my pets from the shelter and they are very talented and very smart."
Tickets for the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater can be purchased online by visiting www.ChenangoArts.org or by calling the box office directly at (607) 336-ARTS (2787). The Martin W. Kappel Theater is located in the Chenango Arts Council at 27 West Main Street in Norwich.
The event is part of the Chenango Arts Council's 43rd season Performance Series and is made possible by corporate season sponsor NBT Bank.
