SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville’s Alex Thompson earned a trip to the Time Union Center for the New York State Division-II Wrestling Championships in two weeks after winning the 220 pound Section III title Saturday night.
Thompson, who has been dealing with a back injury for the last few weeks, started his four-match day off with an 11-3 major decision over Mitchell Tanner from Port Byron.
In the quarterfinals, the Marauders’ junior pinned his opponent in the third period, moving into the semifinals against the second-seeded Jared Makuch of South Lewis.
Pulling off the slight upset, Thompson won 5-0 to move into the championship bout against the top seed of the 220 pound bracket, Josh Greenwood of Beaver River.
Greenwood pinned his way into the finals on the top half of the bracket, which started off with back-to-back byes.
With 55 seconds remaining in the match, Thompson put Greenwood on his back and heard the slap of the mat seconds later as the S-E wrestler pinned for the title.
Thompson avenges his loss in the finals from a season ago when Joe Benedict of South Jefferson/Sandy Creek. Benedict went on to win the state championship.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Ethan Eldred and Morgan Lakin each reached the semifinal round Saturday afternoon but both fell short, heading to the wrestleback rounds. Both placed as Eldred defeated Little Fall’s Anthony Servidone with a 8-6 sudden victory.
Eldred, who will wait for the Section III wildcard announcements on Wednesday, has seen Servicone three times this season. He has earned a win over the Little Falls wrestler each time.
Lakin finished sixth after losing to Hunter Shaut, the Section III 145 pound runner-up, by pinfall. Following the semifinals match with Shaut, Lakin fell in the consolation semifinals as well as the fifth/sixth place bout.
The three were the only Marauders to wrestle at the championships. They combined to finished 14th out of 30 teams in the tournament.
