Bobcats return to MAC championship with win over Walton in semifinals
Lady Storm fall to Eagles; Norwich perfect in STAC play
BAINBRIDGE – For the fourth straight season, the Lady Bobcats of Bainbridge-Guilford will return to the Midstate Athletic Conference championship game following their 69-34 win over fourth-seeded Walton Monday night.
Bainbridge-Guilford started the game out with six first-quarter 3-pointers made between three of their five starters. Leading the way with three in the first quarter was Kori Thornton, B-G’s guard who has found her shot as of late.
“Our 3-point shooting in the first quarter really set the tone for the game,” said Bobcats head coach Bob Conway. Bainbridge-Guilford led 28-7 after the first and continued to outscore the Warriors in every stanza after.
Finishing with five scorers in double figures, the Bobcats cruised to the win behind their long range shooting and their defense on the other end of the floor.
Walton’s Olivia Harby, one of the two leading scorers on the roster, was held to just seven points which is well below her average. Their other scoring leader, McKenzie Clough, paced the Warriors in the third quarter with eight of her team-best 16 points.
Also scoring 16 in the contest was Abi Selfridge to lead the Bobcats in the scoring column. Erica Selfridge knocked down three 3-pointers in the win on her way to 14 points while Thornton added another to make a game-high four made shots from beyond the arc. She also ended the night with 14.
Macie Leizear added 13 in the win and Isabelle Decker was the fifth player to score double-digits for B-G, scoring 10 for the game – all coming in the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats will face Unatego in the finals on Friday at the Binghamton University Events Center. Unatego topped Delhi in a lopsided contest, 50-22. When the two teams met in the regular season, Bainbridge-Guilford held off the Lady Spartans to win a close one with the final score of 43-41.
The MAC girls basketball championship will tip-off at 8 p.m., following the conclusion of the boys championship.
Deposit-Hancock 41, Unadilla Valley 38
DEPOSIT – Despite the hard play on the defensive end of the floor, the Unadilla Valley Storm fell in a close game to the Eagles of Deposit-Hancock Monday night, with a final score of 41-38.
The two teams went into the halftime break separated by just three points. Deposit-Hancock’s Laycee Drake paced her team in the first half, scoring 11 of her game-high 22. On the other side, UV’s Kyleigh George led the Storm with nine points in the first two stanzas, keeping her team within reach.
Following the intermission, the defensive effort by both teams picked up as Unadilla Valley held the Eagles to just seven points in the third while Deposit-Hancock allowed four points to be scored by the Storm.
Entering the final eight minutes, UV trailed by six points. Five Storm players combined to outscore the Eagles in the fourth, 15-12, but Unadilla Valley fell three points shy of completing the comeback bid.
George led the team with 12 points but UV’s offensive production ended with balance numbers as Shelby Meade ended with eight, Sophie Off and Meegan White each scored seven and Kirsten White finished with five.
Haleigh Weyrauch added eight points for the Eagles in the win.
The Lady Storm took on Afton Friday night and won 60-29 to end their regular season play.
UV started the game out with a 23-3 lead after the first quarter. From there, they cruised to the victory by scoring double figures in the next two quarters.
Afton outscored the Storm in the second and fourth stanzas but the 20 point lead held by Unadilla Valley was too much for the Crimson Knights to overcome.
Leading all scorers in Friday’s game was Meade with 16 points. She also pulled down 18 rebounds to record another double-double in points and rebounds this season. Teammate Off scored 14 – all in the first half – to help the Storm to the MAC win.
The Crimson Knights were led by Casey East’s 11 points.
Unadilla Valley will now face Oxford on Wednesday with a start time still to be determined.

CHENANGO FORKS – A total of 52 first-half points scored by the Lady Purple Tornado led them to a 82-37 victory over Southern Tier Athletic Conference opponent Chenango Forks Friday night, giving Norwich a perfect 12-0 conference record for the 2018-2019 season.
The intense, in-your-face pressuring defense Norwich used in the first half created several turnovers by the Blue Devils and the Tornado converted offensively following the steal.
Nine of Norwich’s 12 players on the roster were a part of the 52 point scoring rout in the first half. Going into the intermission, the Purple Tornado held a 35 point lead.
Out of the break, Norwich continued to control the tempo as they scored 17 in the third and 13 in the fourth. Chenango Forks was led to 10 points offensively in the last three quarters.
The Tornado’s free throw shooting also helped in the large margin win as they shot 63-percent on the stripe. Taylor Hansen went a perfect 6-for-6 at the line while Saige Benedict, Hailey Colabelli, Abby Flynn, and Halea Eaton missed just one attempt at the line. Nicole Jeffrey made the only attempt at the line.
Triniti Myers made three 3-pointers in the game, leading all scorers with 19 points. Hansen finished with 15 as the rest of the Norwich team balanced in the scoring column.
Benedict ended the night with nine points, Eaton and Evans scored eight points each, Sydney Coggins added seven, Flynn chipped in six and Colabelli and Jeffrey both contributed five.
Bri Fargnoli scored 13 to pace the Blue Devils in the loss.
The Tornado were scheduled to face Elmira at home Tuesday evening but with the weather closing school, the STAC semifinal matchup is postponed to Wednesday at 6 p.m. If Norwich is to win, they will travel to Elmira Thursday night for the conference championship game against Owego – who received a first-round bye.
Game time for the championship is yet to be determined.
