NORWICH – The first Fatnango Fat Bike Extravaganza, a winter fat bike race and community event beginning and ending in Norwich's Weiler Park, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday.
Several classes of races will take place across a groomed trail of about two-and-a-half miles during the winter biking event, which aims to showcase the city's trails and promote outdoor activities through a community-supported, family friendly event.
While online registration is closed, anyone interested in participating is invited to register in person on the day of the races.
In addition to the races, the event will feature food and drink vendors including Bueno Tacos, FoJo Beans, Good Nature Brewing, Bullthistle Brewing Company, and Chobani.
The winter biking event was organized by local cyclist Jason Miller, Rob Baker of the Galena Growlers Mountain Bike team, Dan Sepello and Sara Behrmann of Action Cyclery LLC, and Kevin Cruz of the Greenway Trails committee, who hope to promote cycling in Norwich as a year-round sport.
Baker said in the last year, cycling as a hobby has picked up a lot of steam in Norwich as more and more people, including both locals and tourists, experience all of the different trails of varying difficulties that the area has to offer.
On Sunday, Baker organized an 18-mile fat bike ride through the Pharsalia woods with 30 other cyclists taking part, some of whom travelled from out of town. He said the ride was a great success, with 20 of the cyclists making it the entire way, and added that he hopes more people will participate in the rides in the future.
With the Fatnango Fat Bike Extravaganza on Saturday and more rides planned for the future, Baker said his hope if for the interest in cycling to grow in the area and eventually lead to an economic boon as more people travel from out of town to ride Chenango County trails.
