Police warn homeowners against plowing snow into street

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Police Department is warning homeowners and plowing businesses against moving snow into city streets because of the potential dangers built up ice blocks can pose for pedestrian vehicles and city plows.

According to City of Norwich Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Burlison, some homeowners and companies working for them to remove snow from their property have inadvertently put other drivers and city plow workers at risk by shoving their snow and ice into the street.

"People don't realize how dangerous it can be, but we've had city plows hit snow and ice piles in the street and get spun around which could have resulted in a serious accident," said Burlison. "By pushing snow and ice into the street, homeowners and plowing companies make the road more dangerous for everyone else, and open themselves up to litigation or criminal charges if an accident occurs because of it."

He said moving snow into the road is a violation of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law 1219, and is punishable by a $150 ticket or up to 15 days in jail.
