Lady Bobcats use 11 made 3’s to cruise to first round win over Blackhawks
BAINBRIDGE – A strong first quarter, both offensively and defensively, gave the Lady Bobcats a big start to the game and they carried it through the remainder of the contest as Bainbridge-Guilford took down the Oxford Blackhawks 76-38 in the opening round of the Section IV Class C tournament Tuesday.
B-G’s Selfridge duo paced the home team in the first as Erica and Abi combined to score 20 of the Bobcats’ in the stanza. Erica was lights out from long-range, hitting three 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes of play.
She added another basket from inside the arc to give her 11 for the quarter while sister Abi did most of her work from the inside, scoring four and added a made bucket from behind the 3-point line.
Oxford’s Caitlyn Quigley and Karley Miller each registered a field goal for the Blackhawks four points in the first.
In the second, Oxford started to find an offensive flow as Madalyn Barrows and Ellie Ryan got in on the scoring action. Barrows scored five and Ryan added four points in the stanza while Quigley and Miller each added another from inside the paint.
The Blackhawks tallied 13 points in the second quarter but Bainbridge-Guilford outscored the visiting team behind both Selfridge girls and Kori Thornton’s long-distance marksmanship. Thornton, who has come on with her deadly 3-point shooting as of late, hit back-to-back 3’s to kick the quarter off.
The margin at the intermission was in favor of the Bobcats by 22 points and extended following the break after the home team went on a 21-8 run in the third.
Both Oxford and Bainbridge-Guilford coaches played their bench for some minutes in the fourth. The Blackhawks’ Olivia Kelsey, who played her first varsity game under head coach Chris Palmer, scored four points in the quarter, leading Oxford in the quarter.
Also scoring their first baskets of the game in the stanza were Oxford’s Taylor Moore, Carly Marshman and Jada Albin, who drained a 3-point bucket a the closing buzzer of the contest.
The Bobcats’ Katrien Roefs came off the bench for her first game at the varsity level and scored seven points – two baskets from inside the 3-point line and one from behind – to pace B-G in the fourth. Teammate Alli Miller scored five of her seven points of the contest in the same quarter while Bailey Hart went 2-for-2 at the foul line.
Abi Selfridge came away with double-double in game, totaling a game-high 23 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. She added four assists.
As the Bobcats’ hit a team total of 11 3-pointers, Erica Selfridge knocked down five of them for 15 of her 22 points. Erica recorded a team-best six assists while grabbing five boards off the glass in the B-G win.
Thornton finished with nine points – all coming from beyond the arc. Miller and Roefs each scored seven.
Quigley led Oxford in the scoring column with 13 while Miller ended the night with seven and Ryan finished with six. Barrows kicked in five points.
The Blackhawks end their season with a 10-11 record.
With the fifth-seeded Newark Valley taking down No. 12 Walton with a final of 66-46, the Bobcats will host the Cardinals on Friday for the quarterfinal game. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
