Lady Trojans stunned in opening round of sectionals with Odessa-Montour’s comeback in 4th
GREENE – The host and eighth-seeded Lady Trojans of Greene led by 19 at halftime and were well on their way to a first round win in the Section IV Class C tournament. However, No. 9 Odessa-Montour had different plans as they overcame the large margin with a 24 point fourth quarter to take the 52-44 win Tuesday night.
Despite the good good shooting in the first half by Greene, the lack of defense and the miscues in the fourth were the fall of the Trojans in the fourth quarter according to head coach Dave Gorton.
“We took some bad shots, hurried on offense and turned the ball over too much,” Gorton said. “We just couldn’t get out of our own way in the fourth.”
Leading 33-14 at the break, the Lady Trojans held the visiting Indians to just 14 points in the first two quarters of play. Offensively, Greene shot 11-for-17 inside the arc and three of five from long-range.
McKenna Sergi, the Trojans’ leading scorer from the guard position, led the first half rout with 15 points while teammate Emma Smith tallied nine in the same stretch.
Also giving strong minutes off the bench in the first half were McKenzie Drew and Olivia Kennedy, who combined to score the other nine points put on the score board by Greene in the first half.
“McKenzie and Olivia really sparked us in the first half off the bench as they scored and played really well defensively.”
Out of the intermission, Odessa-Montour doubled Greene’s offensive output in the third quarter, cutting the lead down to 12 points.
Under three minutes into the fourth, the Indians tied the game following a 12-0 run. An Alexis Saunders’ 3-point bucket gave Odessa-Montour the lead at 44-42. It was ultimately the winning basket as Greene was only able to muster up another two free throws for their final points of the game.
Saunders hit a total of three 3-pointers in the contest, two in the final eight minutes of play as part of the 24-4 in the winning. She finished the game with 12 points. Teammate Sara Gardner, who also knocked down three baskets from beyond the arc, led the Indians with 14 points.
Odessa-Montour’s Olivia Grover added 11 points in the win.
Sergi, a senior on the Greene squad, led the Trojans with 15 points. Smith ended the night with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Greene ends the season with a 13-8 final record.
