Police: Greene man responsible for burglary spree
GREENE – A Greene man is facing multiple felony charges after police allegedly caught him in the act of committing a burglary, and executed a search warrant on his residence ultimately finding drugs, two pistols with the serial numbers removed, and items that had been reported as stolen in other burglaries.
Matthew F. Jones, 32, of Greene was charged with third-degree burglary, a class D felony, second-degree burglary, a class C felony, two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, a class E felony, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class D felony, criminal possession of stolen property, seventh-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
According to Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Ernest Cutting, on February 18th, 2019 at approximately 4:42 a.m. the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint stating that an individual was breaking into 45 Genesee St. in the Village of Greene. It was reported that the defendant, Matthew F. Jones placed a ladder up to a window, broke the window, and entered the commercial building.
Cutting said deputies responded to the scene along with members of the Village of Greene Police Department and eventually located Jones traveling on foot in the area.
"After a brief foot pursuit members from both agencies took Jones into custody. A search of the area and path Jones traveled revealed a defaced and loaded .45 Caliber pistol, holster, and mask placed in a garbage can," he said. "A search warrant was conducted on Jones’ residence at 13 South Canal St in the Village of Greene. Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Technicians recovered another defaced handgun, methamphetamine, marihuana, as well as items reported stolen from other local burglaries."
According to Chenango County Sheriff's Office Detective Sergeant Gary A. Miller, law enforcement believes Jones was involved with at least three burglaries in the area, and he noted that Jones had the keys to the building he was breaking into on his person at the time of his arrest.
"The property broken into belonged to the Town of Greene," said Miller. "When we executed the search warrant on Jones' residence, we discovered other items that had been reported as stolen in other cases, one of the items still had the a victim's name on it."
He said other items like the two pistols police recovered had serial numbers scratched out of them, in an attempt to make it more difficult to identify who they were stolen from.
Jones was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail.
