State meet set for Saturday in Staten Island
ITHACA – Several athletes from Chenango County are gearing up to head to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex, located on Staten Island, for the New York State Championships for Indoor Track and Field.
The top two individuals in each event qualify for the championship, to be held March 2, with a third entrant allowed if they met the state qualifying standard at some point during the season.
Heading to the championship meet for the second straight season are Norwich’s Eric Conant and Gabe Gawronski as well as the Tornado’s 4x200 meter relay team.
Conant, running a time of 6.72 in the finals of the Section IV qualifying meet, returns to Staten Island looking to place higher than a season ago. The Norwich senior finished 16th out of 32 runners last year, crossing the finish line at 6.67 seconds in the sprinting dash. Conant ran the same time in a meet earlier this season and will look to break into the finals this year.
Once again racing in the 600 meter run at the New York State Championships come this weekend will be Gawronski. At the Section IV meet held over the weekend, the Purple Tornado senior finished on top of the field with his time of 1:23.48.
In Staten Island a year ago, Gawronski placed 19th and ran what was a personal best of 1:24.30. This season he has topped that time by more than a second and will be looking crack the top 15 if not higher.
The two will be joined by teammate David Berger and Nik Barber for the second year in a row. The 4x200 meter Norwich foursome grabbed Section IV’s top time for the small school division with their time of 1:35.69.
Slightly slower than what they ran at the championships last year, the time is the exact same from the qualifying meet in 2018.
Setting the record for the final time in Staten Island was the group’s 1:35.33. The Tornado relay team has broken that time since the March 2018 meet, shattering the record twice this year with their best being 1:34.07 at the Stanner Games held at The Armory in New York City.
Making their first appearance at the New York State Championships are Norwich’s Zack Lowe in the boys shot put event, Unadilla Valley’s Molly Avolio in the girls shot put, her teammate Josh Nogaret as a member of the Sections IV’s Intersectional Relay Team, and Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton’s Nick Petrutoni in the long jump.
Lowe, who tossed the shot put 48 feet-8 inches beat the rest of the field with the runner-up coming short of his distance by four feet. Lowe as been near the top of Section IV all season long, inching closer and closer to the best.
The Norwich thrower finished second at the class meet, coming in behind Corning’s Robert Mechalke by a half an inch. This time, Lowe launched it past the Corning competitor to take the top spot of the section and will head to the state meet as the best thrower of Section IV.
Avolio, who attended the New York State Outdoor track and field meet last June, will attend the indoor championships after coming in second at the qualifying meet. The Unadilla Valley thrower ended the meet with her best throw landing at 35 feet-8 inches.
The Storm’s distance runner Nogaret placed fourth with his time of 2:45.76 in the 1000 meter run at the Section IV qualifying meet and will run that leg of the section’s intersectional relay team. The intersectional team takes those who have not already qualified for their individual event and combines them to race for the top section.
Petrutoni will compete at the New York State Championships in the long jump after placing second with his best jump of 21 feet-8 inches. The BGA jumper bettered his distance from the week prior by nearly a foot and a half, placing third in the division.
Having great times were Norwich’s Riley Marsh in the 55 meter dash, Katie Gawronski in the 600 meter race and teammate Lucie Martin of the same event.
Marsh, finishing fourth in the sprinting race, nearly broke the Norwich school record. Missing it by four-tenths of a second, the Lady Purple Tornado senior ran a time of 7.67 seconds.
Gawronski and Martin crossed the finish line back-to-back in the 600 meter run. Gawronski came in at a time of 1:43.49, which placed her fifth in the race. Martin tallied a time of just a second and a half more, coming in at six for the race with a time of 1:45.15.
Unfortunately, the three Norwich girls just missed placing as the top two individuals by seconds and will not attended the trip to Staten Island as a competitor.
The Oxford Blackhawks did not have anyone qualify for the state meet but as they are in their first year as an indoor track and field program, it won’t be long before they do have an athlete representing their school in Staten Island.
The New York State Championships are scheduled to start Saturday at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies taking place 15 minutes prior. At the conclusion of the meet, 35 state champions will be crowned.
