Gawronski sheds a full second off personal best in 600 meter race

STATEN ISLAND – Five members of the Norwich boys indoor track and field team returned home from the New York State Championships with a broken record and personal bests from the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on Staten Island.
Breaking the school record for the final time this season was the Norwich Boys 4x200 relay team as the four athletes placed 17th out of 23 teams in the event. The team of Eric Conant, Gabe Gawronski, Nik Barber and David Berger finished the event with a time 1:33.98 that replaced the previous record breaking time (1:34.07) by nine hundredths of a second.
Conant continued his day by running in the 55 meter dash. Running the straight away of the track, the Norwich senior raced to a time of 6.81 seconds. Out of 38 participants in the event, Conant placed 29th overall.
Gawronski, who also had a second event to run in, recorded a personal best time in the 600 meter run. Coming across the finish line at a time of 1:22.32, the Tornado senior took a full second off of his previously recorded personal best.
With his time, Gawronski placed seventh overall among the public high school finishers while finishing ninth throughout all runners, including the federation participants. He started the weekend as the 15th seed in the event.
According to MileSpilt, a website network that provides an in-depth look into the track and field world state-by-state and across the country, Gawronski is currently ranked 30th in the United States for the 600 meter event.
Tornado thrower Zach Lowe placed 16th out of 27 others in the boys shot put. Lowe threw a best of three attempts for a distance of 45 feet-6.75 inches.
In the Section IV State Qualifying meet the week prior, Lowe set his personal best distance with a throw of 48 feet-8 inches.
All Purple Tornado track athletes now prepare for the outdoor season with hopes to end their year once again at the New York State Championship meet. The outdoor track and field season began Monday with the preseason and will end at Middletown High School in June 7 and 8.
