STATEN ISLAND – Molly Avolio and Josh Nogaret represented the Unadilla Valley Storm indoor track and field team at the New York State Championships held at Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on Staten Island over the weekend.
Avolio, making her second appearance at a state championship meet – her first was last June at Cicero-North Syracuse High School for the Outdoor meet – tossed the shot put for a best distance of 32 feet-8.75 inches.
Her best of three attempts placed her in 22nd overall. She did, however, finish in second for her flight of throwers. Avolio also bettered her performance from June with her distance.
Nogaret was part of the Section IV distance medley relay team, an intersectional team made of up the top members from schools in the section.
Starting the team off for the first leg of the race, Nogaret ran the 1000 meter portion of the event and passed the baton on following a season-best time of 2:42.30.
His teammates for the race – Corning’s Camden Zaidel and Horseheads’ Matt Stasiw and Nathan Wilsoncroft – ran the remaining legs and together, the team finished the distance medley relay event with a time of 9:11.59. Their time resulted in the eighth best time in the federation but sixth among public schools.
“Overall, it was a great meet. Both Molly and Josh performed well in their first Indoor State meet,” said UV coach Steve Pelosi. “We are now looking to build off of these performances for the spring season.”
The spring outdoor track and field season officially began with preseason workouts Monday, March 4. The end of the season will culminate at Middletown High School June 7 and 8 for the New York State Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
