NORWICH – A commercial business in Norwich suffered from extreme fire damage Tuesday night, officials said the fire started in a vehicle engine bay, and the building around the vehicle was fully involved in flames upon their arrival.

According to City of Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, the fire department was dispatched to a fire at 6:03 p.m. in MCM Solutions on 99 Borden Ave in the City of Norwich.

"The first engine was on scene in approximately three minutes," said Papelino. "We know the fire started in the engine compartment of a vehicle parked in a bay, but there was a significant amount of damage to the vehicle, making it difficult to determine exactly what caused the fire."

He said the fire was fully involved upon the first engine's arrival, and multiple explosions could be heard in the area as firefighters extinguished the flames. He added that oxygen tanks and other explosive materials were in the garage at the time of the fire.

"There were at least half a dozen explosions, it was one of those where every couple of minutes you're waiting for something to come flying at you," said Papelino. "Last week we had a similar fire but that building had a smoke detection system that was hooked into a monitoring system."

He said because of the monitoring system and working smoke detectors, firefighters were able to handle that vehicle fire before the building took damage. He added that in this case, the commercial business wasn't as lucky.

"We placed tarps over a collection of nearby vehicles and motorcycles to try and save what we could," said Papelino. "The bottom line is, working smoke detectors save property and lives, and without a monitoring service commercial buildings in isolated areas may more vulnerable to significant fire damage."

He said North Norwich and Oxford Fire Departments responded and provided excellent assistance towards extinguishing the fire.
