Sastri announces run for mayor of Norwich
Norwich resident Shawn Sastri formally announced he will run for Mayor of the City of Norwich as a Republican candidate.
NORWICH – Norwich resident Shawn Sastri has formally announced his intention to run for mayor of the City of Norwich as a Republican candidate.
Sastri, a Customer Service employee for CZ-USA/Dan Wesson who was born and raised in Norwich, said after over 10 years of considering running for mayor, the time is now right in his and his family's life to make a run for office.
"This is a whole new experience for me," said Sastri. "I am looking forward to learning the process and what it takes to run for and be the mayor of Norwich."
For his campaign goals, Sastri said he feels strongly about working to ensure the city maintains a strong relationship with the town of Norwich, working to support local businesses, and being readily available to hear the concerns of city taxpayers.
"I would like to see the city and town work together to make Norwich a better place for people to live, work, and visit," said Sastri. "I would also make myself available to the community with regularly scheduled office hours ... I am interested in hearing your concerns of the city."
At CZ-USA/Dan Wesson, Sastri handles all part orders and customer complaints along with shipping and receiving guns for service and repair work. In his spare time, Sastri said he likes to give back to the community, which is another reason he feels compelled to run for mayor.
"For several years I was a volunteer for Norwich/Oxford little league and a volunteer with the Norwich YMCA, have been since the mid-1980s," said Sastri. "I have served as a member of our Parks Commission and I followed in the footsteps of Stu Chase to put up the Christmas lights in East and West Parks for several years. I was a volunteer for the Norwich Cycles Pop Warner Program for 17 years serving in several roles with the organization."
As a Republican candidate, Sastri will face current City of Norwich Mayor Christine Carnrike in the Primary Election on June 25. Carnrike, who has been mayor since January 2016, announced she would seek re-election for mayor in January.
He said he will not run as an Independent candidate should he lose the primary.
In order for a Republican candidate to run for mayor of Norwich, they must receive at least 77 signatures and file their petitions prior to 5 p.m. on April 4. The first date a candidate can file their petitions will be April 1.
