Sherburne-Earlville completes late game comeback to open season with a win

Norwich falls to Oneonta despite getting early hits
LITTLE FALLS – Trailing 5-0 after five innings of play, Sherburne-Earlville needed a big rally to comeback in their season opener Wednesday afternoon. With four runs in the sixth and another three in the top of the seventh, the Marauders were able to take a 7-5 lead in their last trip to the plate.
In the bottom of the seventh, Little Falls tried to create late drama but were only able to come away with one run, giving S-E the one run win.
Starting off the rally in the top of the sixth, Savannah Niles drew a walk. She scored later in the inning along with teammates Alex Kolber, McKenzie Holmes and Dalaney Parker.
The seventh inning saw nearly the same batters head to the plate for the Marauders as Jesse Buruato scored after reaching the basepaths on a fielder’s choice.
With two outs already recorded and two runners on the base, Tessa Cole stepped up the plate and ripped a single to left field. Her shot send both Niles across home plate. Kolber scored later in the inning to take the lead by two runs.
The Mounties’ Kylie Miles, who had already knocked a home run in the early innings of the contest, scored the lone run in the seventh for the home team.
Brooke Hailston was on the mound for S-E through out the entire game. She recorded two strikeouts and gave up just one earned run.
Little Falls’ Jordan Baumeister also pitched the length of the game, striking out four and giving up all seven runs by the Marauders.
Kolber led the offensive attack for Sherburne-Earlville, recording two hits with two RBIs. Niles, Cole, Parker and Nevaeh Waffle each had one hit.
The Marauders (1-0) travel to Sauquoit Valley for a 4:30 p.m. game on Friday.

Oneonta 27, Norwich 7 (5 Innings)
NORWICH – Despite their strong hitting appearance, bettering their bats from struggling season a year ago, Norwich was downed by Oneonta 27-7 in the home opener Wednesday afternoon.
Oneonta opened up the game with 7-0 lead after the top of the first but the Purple Tornado answered with three runs of their own after Morgan Conkling started the inning’s rally for the home with single to right field on a 1-2 count.
Conkling, after advancing to second and third on bases by over throws and passed balls, later scored when teammate ripped a blooper to short centerfield, recording a RBI single.
Later in the inning, Sophie D’Abbraccio knocked in another two runs for Norwich with her screaming double into the outfield.
However, with Oneonta’s Meredith Smithling and Maria Farrell each recording five hits at the plate for the Yellowjackets, the visiting team pulled away in the third with an eight run inning. Oneonta ended the game with a total of 28 hits, including a two-run shot by Taylor Macroni.
Smithling ended with two doubles in her five hits while Farrell scored four runs through out the game for Oneonta.
Norwich’s offensive ended their with 11 hits in 27 at-bats. Conkling went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Triniti Myers also had a multi-hit game, coming away with two hits in three trips to the dish. Myers scored both times she reached base.
Conkling was also in the circle for the home Tornado, pitching all innings with a brief appearance by colleague Olivia Granquist. Conkling dealt five strikeouts on the mound.
Kelly Weeks was the opposing pitcher on the rubber. Weeks struck out four in her three innings of work. Jenna Gaifford took over on the mound in the fourth and finished the game, allowing two runs and striking out two Norwich batters.
Norwich (0-1) will travel to Greene Thursday afternoon for a non-league contest. First pitch is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
