Greene’s Kennedy deals no-hitter to Oxford on Wednesday

OTEGO – Oxford’s Allison Beckwith was a stud in the circle as she struck out 17 Unatego Spartans’ batters in the Blackhawks’ 7-2 win on the road Thursday afternoon.
To go along with her pitching performance, Beckwith went 3-for-3 at the plate ripping two doubles and batting two teammates in for runs.
Also, having a big day at the plate for the Blackhawks was Tricia Bohannon, sparking the offense with three hits in four trips as the dish.
The scoring started for Oxford in the top of the third when Lilie Horton started the rally with a lead-off single. Catherine Northrup pushed Horton up to third with her grounder that caused an error by Unatego’s catcher, Hali Lucia.
With Bohannon at the plate, Horton was able to score on a passed ball for the first run. Later in the at-bat, Bohannon sent a screaming liner to the right fielder to score Northrup from third.
Two batters later, Beckwith drilled a line drive down the third baseline that resulted in a stand-up double and an RBI with Bohannon crossing home plate.
Oxford added another three runs in the top of the fifth as Bohannon scored by a Trinity Vargas double to centerfield. Beckwith sent Vargas in for a run with her second double of the contest and teammate Jesse Howe hit a 1-out single to the shortstop, scoring Beckwith.
Unatego’s Lucia knocked a two-run home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Alexa Hurlburt. Lucia went 2-for-3 for the game.
The Blackhawks tacked on another run in the seventh.
Beckwith allowed just five hits and two runs in a complete game victory on the rubber.
Vargas and Howe also recorded a multiple hit game, each coming away with two. went 2-for-4 and Howe went 2-for-3.
The Spartans’ pitcher Paige McCoy gave up 11 hits with five earned while tossing nine strikeouts in the loss.
“The girls game focused and ready to play,” said newly appointed head coach Ed Holmquist.
The Blackhawks are in action again on Tuesday as they face Afton for their first home game of the season. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

GREENE – The Trojans’ freshman Olivia Kennedy threw a no-hitter Wednesday afternoon, pitching a complete seven innings as Greene defeated the Blackhawks 13-1 in their season opener.
Kennedy tossed 14 strikeouts and allowed just five Oxford hitters to reach the base paths due to walks.
Her offense helped secure in the win, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits. Leading the way for the Trojans’ at the plate were eighth-grade catcher McKenzie Scott while Kennedy helped her own cause. Both had home run shots has Scott drilled a two-run dinger to left field, scoring McKenna Sergi.
Kennedy’s came one inning earlier in the contest as she knocked a grand slam in the bottom of the second sending the ball to deep center field. Her hit made the score 7-0.
Oxford’s lone run of the contest came in the top of the fourth as Karley Marshman crossed the plate due to a passed ball. Marshman got on base due to a walk by Kennedy.
The Blackhawks’ Marshman starting the game in the circle and recorded the loss as she allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Allison Beckwith came in to finished off the game and threw eight strikeouts while giving up six hits.
Greene’s senior Sergi went also had a nice day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk and scoring four runs.
The Trojans’ next action on the diamond was scheduled for Thursday against Norwich but was postponed to a later date. They are now preparing for the next game which is at Sherburne-Earlville Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Both teams enter the non-league matchup with a record of 1-0.
