No cost prom apparel available at upcoming open houses
NORWICH – The cvfree Prom Closet will hold three open houses, including one this Wednesday, to give local high school girls the opportunity to find the perfect outfit for prom at no cost.
Located at 4299 State Highway 23 in Norwich, cvfree church will host three open houses in the coming weeks to showcase roughly 200 prom dresses of all sizes, as well as jewelry and shoes to anyone who is struggling to afford or obtain their own.
The open houses will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17; from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27; and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 6.
Prom Closet organizer Ciara Albrecht said while they consider the service free, the church asks for a $25 deposit fee to ensure the dress is returned. The deposit is returned once the dress is returned.
“We have dresses of all sizes so even if you’re not sure you’ll find something, we’re more than willing to help you,” said Albrecht, who said the service is available to not just all of Chenango County but anyone willing to drive to cvfree. “We’ve got several young high school volunteers that’ll help you pick out dresses and try things on, so it’s very hands-on and welcoming community.”
The cvfree Prom Closet began in Albrecht’s garage four years ago. Its dresses, shoes and jewelry have been donated by Albrecht and other community members.
“I think as a teenage girl prom was super important,” said Albrecht. “It was really good for my self esteem to be able to dress up and feel pretty, and I feel like everyone should be able to experience that even if they can’t necessarily afford it.”
