Commerce Chenango seeks $10 million grant for Norwich

NORWICH – Commerce Chenango held its annual member appreciation meeting on Wednesday, and officials discussed their attempt to bring $10 million dollars to downtown Norwich and recognized local individuals and organizations that went above and beyond in Chenango County.

The event held at the American Legion in Norwich recognized specific individuals and organizations for their recent efforts in Chenango County, naming Chenango Health Network as the best non-profit, Brianna Curley as young professional of the year, and Savurn Memorials as best new business.

“I recognize the board members and the volunteers, but there’s room in our community for everybody to have a hand in helping out,” said Commerce Chenango CEO Steve Craig. He added that each individual and organization did their part towards making their community a better place, and they deserve recognition for their efforts.

As for Commerce Chenango’s efforts, Craig said this is the fourth year the New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) grant will be accepting application. Craig said Commerce Chenango will pursue $10 million dollars on behalf of the City of Norwich.

“This is the programs fourth year in the southern tier region,” he said. “The first year the grant went to Elmira, the second year it went to Watkins Glen, and the third year it went to Owego.”

Craig said this year he hopes Norwich will receive the money as the grant would mobilize even more private investment, amplifying the downtown’s stature as a commercial, residential, cultural and entertainment and employment center.

“They really want us to tell us the story of what our city is, what the investment would do for the city, and why the investment from New York State into downtown Norwich would make sense,” he said. “I think we’re going to have a pretty good basis for the grant, and we’re going to do our best to tell the story of downtown Norwich.”

Craig said Commerce Chenango recently reached out to the public on social media to see what people would like to see added to Norwich if they were to receive the grant.

“We’ve got a ton of productive, out of the box suggestions from social media,” he said. “We’re hoping the suggestions continue and we’re going to try our best to make the grant a reality.

In a statement, Commerce Chenango said the State has awarded $100 million, “to boost local economies and transform communities into vibrant neighborhoods where the next generation of New Yorkers will want to live, work and raise a family.” The DRI is structured as a regional competition, with a $10 million award for each winning downtown.

They added that Commerce Chenango is excited to pursue this opportunity in order to attract and supplement investment in downtown Norwich.

“Don’t let people tell you there are no jobs in Norwich and there are no jobs in Chenango County, because there are,” said Craig. “Things are constantly improving, and it’s up to all of us to continue to make a difference.”
