NEW BERLIN – An unusual walk-off led to the Storm of Unadilla Valley/Gilberstville-Mount Upton completing a comeback against Oxford, taking the win on senior night in New Berlin in the 10th inning.
With the bases loaded for the Storm in the bottom of the 10th, Andrew Jackson stepped up to the plate looking to make something happen. The UV/GMU senior hit a blooper over the head of Oxford’s second baseman.
Attempting to make the play, the Blackhawks’ fielder mishandled the catch to allow the Storm’s Andrew Meyers to come in for the score and the win.
“We fell apart in the fifth inning, committing four of our seven errors,” said head coach Matt Osborne of the Storm. “That allowed Oxford to take the lead but we battled back to tie it in the seventh.”
The Storm held a 6-1 lead prior to the fifth, scoring three in the first and adding another three runs between the third and fourth innings.
The Blackhawks batted through the lineup in the top of the fifth, using the miscues by the UV/GMU defense to gain their lead. Nolan Dodzweit had a single to left field as the only hit in the inning, recording in the scoring rally by the visiting team, taking the 7-6 lead.
Oxford added a run in the top of the seventh as Matt Roach scored on an error by the Storm’s defense on Dodzweit’s grounder in the infield, making the score 8-6.
Moving Roach into scoring position earlier in the inning was Nick Cirello who sent a fly ball to centerfield that dropped in for a single.
UV/GMU answered in the bottom half of the frame as Kyler Butts reached first on an error by the Blackhawks.
Jackson then hit a single after Butts’ stole second to put runners on the corners for the Storm. Butts scored in the inning on mishap by Oxford and Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Timmy Postma, sending the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, UV/GMU saw Meyers reach base after facing two outs. Brandon Kneale and Butts both added singles in the inning, filling the base paths.
“We were able to get a couple runners on base in the 10th, which allowed us to score the winning run,” said Osborne. “We need to cut down on our mental mistakes in the field and on the bases.
Jackson finished the game with three hits and one RBI while Cameron Osborne went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Butts also had three hits and added one one RBI. Jackson, Osborne and Butts each had a double. The Storm’s Tim Postma had one hit and three RBIs.
