Boyfriend of recently deceased Oxford teen held over probation charge
SMITHVILLE – The Chenango County Sheriff's office has arrested a Smithville man for violating his probation. The teen was one of two people inside a Smithville home Friday when another Oxford teen was found dead of a reported gunshot.
Police declined to comment if the arrest was linked to the death investigation.
Police have not named any suspects in the investigation and have not yet determined the manner of death.
On Friday, May 3, police responded to a call that was initially reported to be a death involving a firearm at 36 Water Street in the Town of Smithville. There police discovered the body of Amelia Wakefield, 16, from the Village of Oxford.
In the following days investigators said the death was not a suicide or natural.
According to police, at the time they arrived two other people where also inside the home, the victim's boyfriend and the boyfriend's mother.
The individual identified as the boyfriend, who is 18-years-old, is currently in the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.
He was on probation at the time of the reported shooting. He has since been arrested for violating the terms of his probation. The details of the alleged probation violation have not been released. He is on probation for an undisclosed charge, over a conviction as a youthful offender.
Police are continuing the investigation.
Family and friends said the boyfriend was Cody D. Coleman.
On Thursday the Chenango County Sheriff's Office confirmed Coleman was currently being held at the facility without bail as his probation violation case was pending in Town of Smithville Court. They also confirmed he was one of the individuals inside the home when police responded to reported death.
Coleman was arrest on a bench warrant issued by the Smithville Town Court May 7, three days after the May 3 incident. When police responded that day they conducted a searched of the home and processed the scene.
An autopsy at Lourde's Hospital in Binghamton is still pending.
Members of the Village of Greene Police Department, and New York State Police also aided in the investigation.
Calling hours for Wakefield will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Behe Funeral Homein Oxford. Funeral services are planned for 5 p.m. Friday at Oxford Academy Middle School.
