NORWICH – The Lady Purple Tornado had a tough outing on senior night against the Susquehanna Valley Sabers Thursday afternoon, falling 15-0 in five innings of play.
Norwich recognized their five seniors – Morgan Conkling, Triniti Myers, Jasmine Thomas, Ava Granquist and Olivia Granquist – prior to the start of the contest.
Olivia Granquist, who has suffered a setback in her senior year, threw out the first pitch of the game to the Sabers’ Hannah Aton for a strike, but came out immediately after as head coach Jim Sanford wanted the senior pitcher to toss one on her special night.
Taking over after the one pitch was fellow senior Morgan Conkling, who went the distance for Norwich. She finished the game with three strikeouts in the circle for for the Lady Tornado and had a great day in the field, coming away with some tough plays to get the Sus Valley batters out.
One of her plays included diving for a bunt in the air by a Saber, holding the runners to their bases and preventing a score from happening.
Norwich put contact on the ball several times but the defense by Sus Valley made the plays, keeping a no-hitter intact for their pitcher Bella Gaskin.
That was until Chloe Winton had a blooper just over the infielder’s head, reaching first in the bottom of the fourth to break up Gaskin’s no-no bid. Norwich’s next batter was Lexi Whaley and she made contact for a hard ground ball that went back to the pitcher.
As the Sabers tried to turn a double-play, Gaskin was able throw Winton out at second but a slight bobble by the second baseman prevented Sus Valley from getting the second out as Whaley hustled down the first baseline.
Winton’s hit was the only one Gaskin gave up in the contest and Norwich was unable to put a run on the scoreboard.
Norwich’s defense limited the Sabers to score one run in the second and third innings as Conkling saw six batters in the earlier frame and five in the third.
With the season winding down, the Lady Tornado will be looking to steal a win in their remaining two games on the schedule. Norwich will look to take down Chenango Forks Monday at 4:30 p.m.
