Sprint medley relay teams for the Tornado qualify for nationals
ONEONTA – Battling the rainy conditions in Oneonta, like the teams have most of the season, the Norwich boys and girls track and field team came out on top of the competition at the Oneonta Invitational Friday afternoon. The Boys captured the trophy with 129 points while the girls team used 117 points to finish in the top spot.
The Bainbridge-Guilford girls team nabbed a top-five finish with 58.50 points while the Oxford girls placed seventh and Greene came in at the No. 9 spot. The Bobcats boys team placed seventh and the Trojans finished in 12th.
Norwich’s Miranda Cole and Eric Conant added more first place ribbons to their 2019 collection in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Cole crossed the finish line in the 100 at 12.87 seconds, just tenths of a second ahead of B-G’s Erica Selfridge.
Cole and Selfridge had the same 1-2 finish in the 200 meter event as the Norwich freshman sprinter ran to a time of 26.55 seconds. Selfridge finished the race at 27.67 seconds. Cole’s colleague Riley Marsh placed third in both events while Milla Gonzalez of Oxford placed fifth in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
Conant, who has run one of the fastest times in the area for the 100 meter dash this season, captured the event with a time of 11.33 seconds. Teammates David Berger came across the finish line in fourth placed and Griffin Mills placed fifth, running a time seven-hundredths of a second behind Berger.
Conant and Mills raced in the 200 meter event with Conant taking the top spot with a time of 23.24 seconds. Mills, who placed third in the event, was just five-tenths of a second off his senior teammate’s pace.
Bainbridge-Guilford’s Nick Petrutoni was in the mix for both events as well. Pretrutoni, the Bobcats’ top sprinter, placed sixth in the 100 meter race with a time of 11.7 seconds and earned a fourth placed finish in the 200. In the slightly longer distance, Pretrutoni was on the heels of Mills, placing fourth at 23.83 seconds.
Both of the Purple Tornado Sprint Medley Relay teams finished in first and with their times, the two foursomes qualified for the New Balance National meet – an event the boys’ team qualified for a season ago.
The 800 meter event, which is broken down by the four runners racing different legs of 200, 100, 100 and 400 meters, saw the Norwich boys team – Gabe Gawronski, Berger, Mills and Conant – finish the event at 1:34.96 to break the school record once again.
The Lady Tornado four – Hailey Colabelli, Anglea Carlson, Cole and Marsh – sprinted to a first place time of 1:53.04.
The Trojans’ group of four that competed in the same race placed four on the girls side of the event, coming across the finish line at 2:07.11.
Gawronski of the Tornado raced in the 400 meter run individually during the invitational as well running a time of 51.94 seconds. In the sprint medley relay, the senior’s split was 49.6 seconds.
Gawronski also jumped in the high jump field event, placing second with a final height cleared of 5 feet-11 inches. Tying in the Norwich high jumper was Greene’s Tristan Austin. Both were beat by Josh Wayman of Shenevus/Worchester, jumping 6 feet-2 inches to win the meet.
Katie Gawronski didn’t let her older brother outshine her on the track as she came away with first place finishes in both the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdles. Her younger sister, who is a junior for Norwich, won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.2 seconds. Marsh placed second in the event to give the Lady Tornado a 1-2 finish.
Gawronski time in the 400 meter hurdles was 1:07.8, a second higher than her personal best. She has set her sites on the school record this season and has come close but has had to deal with the wet conditions most of the season.
Hurdling teammate Nik Barber came away with the top spot on the podium for Norwich in the boys 400 meter hurdles event, finishing with a time of 1:00.84 seconds. Coming in right behind him was colleague Noah Bufalini.
In the boys 110 meter hurdles, the Bobcat’s top hurdler Gavin Farrell placed fifth with a time of 19.19 seconds. Farrell’s Counterpart on the B-G hurdling squad was Kristen Chambers who placed fifth in the girls 100 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line at 18.60.
Ethne Degan of Bainbridge-Guilford has not lost the 1600 meter event in any meet or invitational in the 2019 season. That feat did not change Friday in Oneonta as she once again took the top time in the event, finishing at 5:33.24. She also placed fourth in the 800 meter event with a time of 2:29.35.
Greene’s Jess Unkel earned a fourth place finish in the 400 meter race, running the one lap around the track at 1:07.19. Her boys teammate, Tristan Austin finished fifth in the same event, coming in at a time of 54.48 seconds.
Norwich’s Hailey Colabelli took first with her time of 1:00.48. Colabelli also ran the 400 meter leg of the girls sprint medley relay. Lucie Martin of the Tornado placed second in the two lap race, finishing at 2:28.67.
On the boys side of the 800 meter event, Norwich’s Makaio Sutton placed second and teammate Nolan Reid came across the finish line just behind him. Sutton paced the two, finishing at 2:13.09 with Reid coming in six-tenths behind.
Julian Roque, Stephen Kman and Jada Reynolds braved the steeplechase event for the Tornado. All runners placed in the top six of the event with Roque and Reynolds finishing fourth and Kman coming in sixth on the boys side.
The field events of the Oneonta Invitational were filled with place-finishers from the area also. B-G’s Selfridge claimed first in both the long and triple jump events while Norwich’s Angela Carlson placed fourth in the triple jump.
Carlson added a second place finish in the high jump while the Bobcat’s Kira Davidson placed third. The two jumpers were separated by two inches for a final clearing height.
Oxford’s Katelyn Ingraham stood on the podium in both the long and triple jump events, placing fourth in the long jump while finishing third in the triple jump. B-G’s Kristen Chambers also placed in the triple jump, standing in sixth with her best jump of 30 feet-11 inches.
In the boys long jump, Petrutoni placed second with his distance of 20 feet-8.25 inches while both Eli Craddock and Griffin Mills finished in third and fourth place. Craddock and Mills each finished with a best distance of 20-plus feet in the event with Craddock out jumping Mills by a quarter of an inch.
Craddock placed higher than Petrutoni in the triple jump by six and a half inches. The Tornado jumper earned second with his distance of 42 feet.
Norwich’s Zach Lowe stood on the podium for both the shot put and discus events, however it wasn’t at the top. Lowe placed third in the discus throw with a distance of 118 feet-10 inches. He finished second in the shot put, tossing a best throw of 46 feet-5.5 inches.
His colleague on the girls side, Shakira Alexander placed second in the discus throwing event with her best distance of 97 feet-10 inches. Coming in fourth was Norwich’s Emily Evans.
Finishing fifth in the shot put was Oxford’s Alexis Kohlhepp with a throw of 29 feet-9.15 inches as the only local competitor to stand on the podium.
Oxford, Greene and Bainbridge-Guilford will compete next at Sidney on Wednesday afternoon as part of the Midstate Athletic Conference championships. Norwich will take the track on Thursday for the Southern Tier Athletic Conference championships. Both meets are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
