Tornado falls short of playoffs with loss to Forks
B-G splits last two games of season
CHENANGO FORKS – With their post-season hopes hanging on Saturday afternoon’s match-up against the Chenango Forks Blue Devils, Norwich needed to come away with the win. After falling behind 4-1 at the end of the second inning, the Purple Tornado battled but couldn’t come away with the offensive production they needed to overcome the Blue Devils, losing 6-4.
Norwich led 1-0 midway through the second but Forks scored four runs in the frame – one scoring on an error – to take the lead for good.
The Tornado added a run in the third to cut the margin down to two runs but back came the Blue Devils during their trip to the plate, answering with yet another run. Forks tacked on a run in the fourth, scoring their final of the six runs as Norwich’s defense came together behind pitcher Jordan Jacquette.
Jacquette did the work in the bottom of the fifth, striking out two Blue Devils. In the sixth, he got all outs by forcing the Forks’ batters to fly out to the outfield. He finished the game with a total of six strikeouts. He surrendered six hits in the loss.
Norwich came away with five hits as Marcus Cashman led the Tornado with two. Tanner Franklin scored two runs for the visiting team and picked up hit in the fifth inning.
JT Vinal and Justin Bates each had a hit in the contest while teammate Kegan Wright added a hit and the lone RBI for Norwich.
“We had some running mistakes and left to many on base offensively,” Rich Turnbull, Norwich head coach. “And once again, our [five] errors plagued our defense. It’s hard to win when you commit five errors.”
The Tornado end their 2019 season 5-9, a year in which they started 0-6 but turned it around with four straight wins.
“Nothing seemed to go our way all year, and yesterday was no different,” said Turnbull. “Disappointed that we didn’t qualify for sectionals but proud of the players they way they fought through adversity all year. They could have packed it in when some calls and weather situations didn’t go our way but they fought to the end.”
