Lady Marauders meet magic number to reach Section III playoffs with win over Mustangs
MOUNT MARKHAM – The Lady Marauders brought their bats to Mount Markham on Wednesday night, compiling 15 hits to score 13 runs for the big win. Sherburne-Earlville, who needed the win over Mount Markham to make the Section III tournament, bounced back after a 9-3 loss Tuesday night against Cooperstown.
Bailey Lagoe of the Marauders went 4-for-4 at the plate and recorded three RBIs in the win. She also scored three runs in the game, crossing home plate the most of any of the Marauders.
Teammate Tessa Cole came away with four hits as well, stepping into the batter’s box five times throughout the contest. Also producing three RBIs for S-E, Cole’s last one came on a sacrifice fly ball to left field, scoring a tagging Lagoe from third.
The Marauders’ Brooke Hailston pitched a gem in the circle, tossing a complete game allowing just two runs on six hits and striking out five.
Sherburne-Earlville and Mount Markham were scoreless through the first two innings of play but the Marauders opened up the game with 10 runs in the top of the third, pulling away early. Mount Markham scored one run in the bottom half of the frame, but S-E answered their run in the fourth inning with two more runs.
The Marauders added one more in the top of the seventh on Cole’s sac fly.
Hailston pitched to contact and her defense – once settled after a three errors in the second inning – did their job behind her, getting the outs to limit Mount Markham’s scoring.
One day earlier, S-E fell to Cooperstown after the large offensive production from the Hawkeyes in the fourth inning.
Sherburne-Earlville held a lead early in the contest, going up 2-0 after back-to-back singles by McKenzie Holmes and Tessa Cole.
However, the Marauders were unable to score another run until the bottom of the fifth when a base hit single sent Alex Kolber across the plate.
The damage was already done by the Hawkeyes though, as they took advantage of the two miscues by S-E in the fourth inning, keeping Cooperstown in the batter’s box. The visiting team tacked on another three runs in the final two innings of play to win 9-3.
Hailston was on the mound against the Hawkeyes as well, again throwing all seven innings. She recorded eight strikeouts in the loss.
Cole was once again hot at the plate, going 3-for-3 on the day. Holmes ended the afternoon 2-for-3 and Kolber added a hit in the fifth to give the Marauders a total of six hits for the game.
Sherburne-Earlville now waits for the Section III seed meeting to happen Thursday morning to find out their first round matchup for the tournament. The first game could be as early as Friday afternoon.
