Oxford’s playoff run cut short by second-seeded Thomas A. Edison Spartans

ELMIRA – The Oxford Lady Blackhawks saw their season come to a close Wednesday at Thomas A. Edison, falling to the Spartans 15-0 in the opening round of the Section IV Class C softball tournament.

The Thomas Edison batters got the game going early, scoring three in the bottom half of the first inning.

Oxford’s defense held the Spartans to just those three runs, getting out of a jam in nearly every inning as Thomas Edison left several baserunners stranded.

However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Blackhawks struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Spartans, giving up nine runs on eight hits and an error. Of those eight, the Thomas Edison batters sent the ball deep enough to get six doubles in the frame.

The Spartans added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Blackhawks’ Allison Beckwith tossed the final game of her high school career against the Spartans with senior teammate Jessie Howe behind the plate.

Ringing up four Thomas Edison batters over the six innings in the circle, Beckwith ended her career at a total of 387 strikeouts. Beckwith now holds Oxford’s career strikeout record after taking the reins from Alison Curtis on May 9 against Unadilla Valley. The school’s record will now stand at 387.

Offensively, Trinity Vargas went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Blackhawks in the hits column while Karly Miller added a single in the second inning to give the team a total of three hits for the game.

Bella Willsey led the Spartans to victory in the pitcher’s circle. She went seven innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out 16 and walking one.

“I was very pleased with our effort this year and our ability to overcome challenges,” said Ed Holmquist about the Blackhawks’ season. “We will miss the seniors as they guided us to the direction we want to go. We have a young group of players coming back next year that are excited to put in the required offseason effort to continue are improve this program.”

Oxford ends their season at a final overall record of 6-8.
