NORWICH – After a community driven fundraising campaign lead by parents, local businesses, and school officials, the Norwich High School and Middle School Archery Teams had the opportunity to travel to Kentucky for a national archery competition earlier this month.
The team traveled to the, “National Archery in our Schools Program” held in Louisville, Kentucky from May 8 through May 11, and over 16,000 archers participated in the event. 27 of those archers were from Norwich after a rigorous fund raising campaign held by local businesses and parents in an effort to make the trip happen.
YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen said the teams thanked their coaches for their dedication, support and
enthusiasm.
“We would also like to acknowledge the Norwich City School District administrators and teachers who supported us in reaching this goal, the community at large who supported our Krispy Kreme donut sale, those families that supported our Facebook fundraiser page, and those that came and supported our Community Barn Sale fundraiser,” said Mullen. “Your financial support directly supported our students in their efforts to compete on a national level against the best.”
He added that the teams would also like to thank AAA Northeast, Southeast Family YMCA in Louisville, the newly formed Norwich Archery Booster Club, all of the businesses that financially supported the team, and all of the parents that worked hard to get their children/archers to Louisville.
The Norwich High School Archery team was comprised of Coach Nicole Beckwith and Archers Katherine Becker, Chase Ballard, Andrew Clarke, Andrew Mullen, Haley Shattuck and Shayne Webster. All six archers were able to compete in the Centershot National Bullseye Tournament, the Centershot National 3D Tournament, and the NASP Eastern National IBO 3D Tournament while in Kentucky.
The Middle School Archery team consisted of Coach Terry Hagenbuch and Archers Pierson Bookamer, Zavier Bucksbee, Anthony DeRensis, Elias Francis , Ashlee Frayer, Eric Maricle, Braden Reid, Meadow Rosenthal, Alexis Smith, Erin Smith, Aleks Smietana, Aidan Stafford, Wyatt Thornton, and Danika Wilchynski.
“What a learning experience for these students,” said Mullen. “We are proud to report that the archers represented their schools, their community, their families, their state and themselves admirably well.”
