Greene’s season comes to a close after second-round loss to Edison
ELMIRA – The host Thomas A. Edison Spartans scored four in the first inning of the game, giving the Greene Trojans the task of pulling off a comeback in the second round of the Section IV Class C Tournament. Unfortunately, the early lead by Edison was too much for Greene to completely overcome, falling 5-3 Monday afternoon.
The Trojans ended the game out hitting the Spartans, eight hits to seven hits, but Edison used two errors to score two of their five runs.
Greene answered the four-run first inning by the Spartans with a score in the second, cutting the lead down to three runs. The Trojans then added one in the fourth frame to put the deficit at just two.
In the top of the fifth inning, Owen Howell started the trip to the plate for Greene with a lead-off single on the sixth pitch of the at-bat. He then stole second base to set himself up in scoring position and moved to third when teammate Brandyn Scott hit a grounder to Thomas Edison’s shortstop.
Facing two outs in the inning, Logan Kennedy took the first pitch he saw in the batter’s box and sent screaming to right field for a double. Moving on contact was Howell, scoring from third for the third run of the game for Greene to make it a one run difference.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans added an additional run to go bak up by two. Defensively, Edison shut down the Trojans in the sixth and allowed just one hit – a fly-ball single by Grayson Flanagan – in Greene’s last at-bats of the contest.
Tom Kane picked up the win for Thomas A. Edison, lasing five innings on the hill. He allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out six. Xander Burch threw two innings in relief, holding off the Trojans in the process.
Greene’s Nick Shoemaker tossed the complete seven innings from the mound. He surrendered seven hits and three earned runs over six innings, striking out five and walking one.
Grayson Flanagan and Trenton Rapp each managed each managed two hits in the game to lead Trojans offense. Kennedy, Rapp and Jacob Funnel all had one RBI.
The game between the Trojans and Edison was step up after Greene defeated Unatego 8-1 on Friday. Thanks to five runs in the fifth inning and Greene’s Shoemaker, Scott and Rapp all contributing in the batter’s during the frame.
All drove in runs during the inning but Scott’s double to center field with the bases loaded gave him three of his four RBIs for the game.
Unatego got things started in the first inning as Tyler Shaul grounded out but sent Derrik Rose across the plate to score the first run of Friday’s game.
In the bottom of the first inning, Greene tied things up at 1-1 as Scott picked up his first RBI of the day with a single to to the third baseman. Grayson Flanagan came in to score.
The Trojans added one run in the third before tallying their five runs in the fifth to take the commanding 7-1 advantage.
Kennedy was credited with the win for Trojans on Friday, giving up just three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out eight.
Austin Gilbertson took the loss for Unatego. He allowed 11 hits over six innings while recording six strikeouts.
Greene’s Flanagan, Shoemaker, Scott and Rapp all came away with two hits in the game, leading the high-powered offensive that tallied 11 hits. The Trojans also totaled eight RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
The Spartans’ Derrick Rose went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Unatego in hits.
Greene ends their season with a final record of 13-7.
