Marauders good play not enough for 3-seed Marcellus Mustangs

MARCELLUS – One of the better seasons that the Lady Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville has had since 2015, came to close Tuesday afternoon after the 14-seeded team fell 7-1 to No. 3 Marcellus in the Section III Class B tournament.
In her final game wearing a Marauders’ uniform, Brooke Hailston was in the circle, throwing all seven innings. She ended her career with a strikeout as she pitched to contact against the Mustang batters. Hailston finished with eight wins and nearly 200 strikeouts for her two-year stint at the varsity level.
The first inning saw Sherburne-Earlville score an early run as Tessa Cole singled on the first pitch of her at-bat, sending Alex Kolber in for the 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, it was the only run scored by the Marauders for the game, despite their four hits. Cole led the S-E offense as she went 2-for-3 with one RBI in the game. Her second hit came in the top of the fourth when she started the inning with a lead-off single to center.
The bottom of the second inning is when Marcellus tied things up at 1-1. The Mustangs’ Aubrey Fraher drove in one when she singled to the third baseman Kolber. On the throw to first, Fraher’s teammate Emily Durand came into score and Fraher was safe at first.
The home team added another run in the second inning, but were held scoreless in the third as Hailston and the Marauders were able to get out of a bases loaded jam.
The Mustang’s Hannah Durand led the inning off with a single to centerfield. Then, Emma MacLachlan laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hannah Durand to second.
Hannah’s sister Emily Durand was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second before Elaine Grattan hit a grounder that put her on the base paths with a fielder’s choice.
As Sherburne-Earlville only had one out against Marcellus in the inning, the visiting team needed to find a way to stop the Mustangs from taking advantage of the large scoring opportunity.
Hailston did just that as she battled in the at-bat against Katie MacLachlan before getting her to swing on the third strike for the second out of the frame. The S-E senior pitcher also forced the next Marcellus batter to fly out to left field Courtney Gier, picking up the third out without any runs scored.
Marcellus scored two more in the fourth to pull ahead 4-1 before adding another three runs in the bottom of the fifth to win 7-1.
Despite the loss, the Marauders put forth a good fight against the third-seeded team from Marcellus. “We played a great game against a tough team,” said head coach Michelle Parker. “I’m proud of these girls.”
Sherburne-Earlville finishes the season at 8-7 overall.
